Using Wainscoting to Transform a Room
The term wainscoting refers to the practice of lining the lower third to half of a wall with decorative wood paneling.
Many interior designers feel that adding wainscoting is one of the most effective ways a homeowner can add a little style, class and interest to a room. Many modern homes built these days are rather plain and bland but wainscoting can give these rooms texture and architectural interest, making them feel less “boxy”.
When it comes to considering adding wainscoting to your home there is no doubt that if you can afford to hire a custom carpenter to do it you should. There isn’t any wainscoting in the world that can really compare to that built with the craftsmanship, care and creativity of a custom carpenter. If your budget won’t quite run to that though you do not necessarily have to give up on the idea.
These days there are a number of manufacturers who produce and sell pre manufactured wainscoting kits. These kits come in a variety of different sizes, grades and styles. So chances are that you will be able to find one that matches your vision fairly closely. It won’t be custom, but it will still improve the look of almost any room. That is, if it is installed correctly.
Even if you opt for pre-built wainscoting, you really should still spend the extra to have it professionally installed. Just because you couldn’t quite afford custom built wainscoting does not mean you can’t fool a lot of people into believing that you did if it is nicely installed and well finished.
