Build Your Own Pool – What to Think About Before You Start

Published by under Pools & Spas

Who wants to have his own swimming pool most certainly ponders if it should be an above ground pool or an in-ground pool and where exactly it should be built. You think of whether the pump and the filter should be in the house or if a utility shed or a bigger pit next to the pool should be built. It is also a big question, if a coping or a roofing is needed. If you think you do need a roofing or a coping you have the choice between a great variety of models. You also may think of adding it later when you have saved some money for it. You may also want to have a hydro-flow system and illumination equipment.

If some day you finished building your own pool to your liking and you enjoy the amenities of your own pool, you might have surprising and unwelcome visitors from the police, the building inspection or the public water supply. To circumvent this, you should get some information and negotiate a bit before you start to build your own pool.

First you should inform yourself, if it is allowed to build your own pool at your place of residence. If there is water shortage now and then it is absolutely possible, that you are not allowed to build your own pool. It is also possible, that you are allowed to build a pool, but usage – especially filling with water – is restricted. This depends on your location and can be asked for at your municipal administration.

Notably if you want to build an in-ground pool you may run into further legal obstacles. At some places you are allowed to build a swimming pool without further ado. Then at some places this may be subject to report whereas at other places you have to apply for a permit.

The difference is as follows: Is the construction subject to report, you have to go to the municipality and report your project. Eventually you also have to submit a plan. The project will be filed and you can begin to build your own pool as you have planned. Is the construction subject to approval, you have to submit your plan to the competent authority. They review the specifications and they approve it or not or they call for modifications. It is also possible that you have to hold a construction negotiation with your neighbors, where they are allowed to call for modifications. This also depends on your location and can be asked for at your municipality. By the way you can ask if the construction of a swimming pool affects the tax on land and buildings or tax on assets.

You also have to clarify the question where you can dispose the water. Even if you live in a place, where you can use your pool all the year round you have to empty the pool once a year to thoroughly clean it. Because of the chemicals in the water it is forbidden in some places to drain it into the sewerage. Also you should not drain it into a river or a lake. In some places it is only allowed to let it seep away on your own property. But that is exactly what is forbidden elsewhere to protect the ground water. This depends on where you live and can be asked for at your municipal administration or at the public water supply.

To prevent having trouble with your insurance company afterwards you should make sure that your pool and the coping or roofing are also insured. In dependence on your location you should ask, if damage caused by hail, storm, flood waters, mud flow, avalanche, land slip, snow pressure and – if necessary – vandalism is covered.

Thus there is a lot to think about before you can start to build your own pool.

Jacuzzi Marbella – Problems

Published by under Pools & Spas

Hot Tubs from the east usually have every accessory but not the one they really need a Skip!.

I heard the other day that somebody who had bought a cheap Hot Tub which was an eastern import is unable to get the spare parts so that the heater does not work.

You even hear stories of people that buy cheap eastern hot tubs and they do not get the cover for the hot tub till months later.

We saw a cheap eastern import recently with out any floor or base, no insulation, just a load of rubbish. No insulation on the side panels so heat will simply be lost.

Then the electric cables were loose dragging on the floor and with no base that means that they would get wet when it rains! Good chance of getting electrocuted just to save some money that I would call false economy.

Naturally we told the owner to tie all the cables clear of the floor. The quality of the cables used are not up to western standards and you can tell that by one glance its as simple as that. The plumbing also falls way short of western standards.

Oh why worry if they are fool enough to buy a cheap import from the east what do they honestly expect.

It’s a a bit like the lead paint in toys that come from the east, many people think that they are clever by saving money, but the truth is that they buy a lot of trouble for the future. So in reality it is a false economy.

Quality manufacturers consider the long term of spa ownership when designing their products. Manufacturers that use advanced manufacturing methods employ ABS-backed acrylic instead of the older style fibreglass and they are able to provide a much sturdier, longer lasting product.

Not only is the manufacturing process that does not use fibreglass as a backing material more environmentally friendly, but the stronger more expensive ABS backed shell material allows for elimination of foam shell support.

So those manufacturers that use full foam are doing it to support a cheaper shell material. Their approach to production is simply to start from the approach of lets find the cheapest way of construction not the best.

Many manufacturers use the lower priced standard Acrylic that must be supported with fibreglass and foam.

The foam may be referred to as insulation, but in reality it actually supports this lower priced shell material and does not represent a “green” approach to long lasting maintenance, but is only necessary for the support of lower priced shell materials.

We have also heard it said that full foam is used to eliminate the noise of the water in the pipes. Well we are appalled to hear that said as it simply must be a badly designed spa that needs that. It is just simply a cover story to hide the cheap production methods.

There are very many disadvantages with spraying low cost expanding foam into the spa cabinet including lack of access to important plumbing parts and jet surfaces as well as the ability to quickly check for and fix a leak should it occur.

Many times a leak in a foam filled cabinet will manifest itself over many months and the result is a rotted out interior with odorous, soaked foam material that creates quite a mess.

Obviously a good well designed and engineered product will lead to an outstanding hydrotherapy massage. Where one will be able to enjoy a vigorous or perhaps soothing massage with the ability to be able to adjust and modify your massage experience to suit or enhance your mood as appropriate.

In summary I would suggest that as a Hot Tub Jacuzzi style spa is probably the third most expensive purchase that you make after your home and perhaps a car that you should try to buy the best that you can afford but make sure that you do not buy a cheap eastern import or a the dog dish looking hot tub. Look for proper branded acrylic such as Lucite and Quarite and ask to see the dealers color chips from those manufacturers. Sometimes it is Lucite inspired but not Lucite. Look for Balboa controls and aim for a manufacturer who has been making spas for many years. A very good simple test is to see if your hot tub dealer is on first name terms with the owners and directors of the manufacturers of the products’ he is supplying. This is of course impossible if they are based in the East!

Outdoor Hot Tubs – Heaven In Your Backyard

Published by under Pools & Spas

If you are thinking about installing a new hot tub, there are many things that you should consider. The biggest consideration is if you want your new tub indoors or outdoors. There are many reasons why you might consider both. However, outdoors is probably your best option.

There are many reasons why you might be considering installing a new hot tub. It is very therapeutic if you are an athlete. If you find yourself traveling to a spa all of the time so you can relax your muscles in the tub then you will probably save a lot of money by purchasing your own. You will also save a lot of time when you are able to soak in your tub whenever you like rather than having to make the time for it and travel to a location with a spa. You also can benefit from a tub for entertainment purposes.

Indoors vs. Outdoors

There are certain things that you should think about with a hot tub. Space is one of the biggest things that you need to think about when you install a tub at your home. You should be sure that you have a place to put a hot tub. If you want to have an indoor tub then you must have a room that is appropriate for the tub. That means that you cannot have flooring that will ruin from water. You need to have the appropriate ventilation in the room also. Some people find that they have no way to actually get a tub into their home. This must be considered also when you are thinking about a new tub. It is common for people to have to build on an extra room on their home so they can have an indoor tub. Preparing the floors, providing ventilation, getting the tub into the home, and building on an extra room can be quite costly for you.

The only consideration you need to think about with your tub outdoors is having appropriate lighting around the tub that is low voltage. There are safety codes that you should consider and make sure that you are following them. Also be sure that your tub is not placed near or under any power lines.

An outdoor tub is usually the best option when space issues are concerned. Most backyards provide the proper spacing for a hot tub and you don’t have to worry about floors, ventilation, and building on an extra room.

Buying a New Hot Tub

When you consider buying a new tub cleaning the unit might be of importance to you. An indoor tub doesn’t require much cleaning at all because it is indoors and there is not much debris indoor to gather in the tub. Outdoor tubs require quite a bit of cleaning because when the wind blows, leaves and debris will be blown into the tub. You can avoid the dirt and the dust from gathering in the tub by using a hot tub cover. A cover will not eliminate all dirt issues but it will make a big difference.

Many people prefer an indoor tub because of the longer lasting life of the tub. They also like the idea of being able to sit in their tub year round without having to worry what the weather is going to be like outside. Some people like to sit in their tub outdoors when it is snowing. It is all up to your preference. This is because if your tub is outdoors then it will have to endure weather conditions like the snow, heavy rainfall, and sun damage. However, there are tubs that you can purchase that are designed to last for years from the weather damage. You also can purchase a tub that has a warranty.

When you have an indoor tub you also have to think about the surroundings. You will have to decorate the room with things that are pleasing to look at. Outdoors you don’t have to worry about any decorating because you have the night sky to look at. There is nothing like sitting in an outdoor tub with the stars shining brightly above you. Many people love to sit outdoors when the wind is blowing slightly, late at night, or even early in the morning when the air is crisp.

If you are making a decision on installing a new hot tub, then an outdoor tub is probably your best option. You don’t have to worry about space issues, flooring, ventilation, and more.

Why You Absolutely Need a Swimming Pool Cover

Published by under Pools & Spas

If you are a swimming pool owner, you’re a lucky homeowner. You have a place to relax and play during the warm weather. Of course, you may incur some high monthly energy bills in the summer too, as running a pool cleaning system and heating a pool can be expensive. And don’t forget all that work you have to do to keep the leaves out and properly maintain your swimming pool. And of course you have to worry about small children or pets falling into the pool when you’re not around…

I’m not getting you down, am I?

I just want to remind you of some of the downsides of being a pool owner so you realize why a swimming pool cover is such a smart investment.

There are three major reasons you should invest in a swimming pool cover:

1. Safety

If you have small children or pets, it’s hard to watch them all the time. However, a good swimming pool cover can protect them from falling into the pool. Many covers are designed for this purpose and you’ll often see their ads with an elephant standing on the pool cover without damaging it or falling in. I guess if an elephant’s weight can be supported, your kids will be okay!

Don’t forget the safety of neighborhood kids too. Even if your kids are grown, you always have to be aware that youngsters from surrounding houses might think it’s fun to sneak into your yard and use your pool while you’re away. Believe it or not, you’d still be responsible if something happened to them. A secure pool cover can save you a lot of grief and worry. Though neighborhood kids might be enticed by a sparkling open pool beckoning to them from across the fence, it’s unlikely anybody is going to take the effort to remove the pool cover to get in.

2. Energy conservation

Are you spending a lot of money heating your pool? Or maybe your water gets too hot in the summer, since you live in a warm climate, and it’s not refreshing to swim in.

Either way, a pool cover can keep hot sun rays out and heated pool water in. This means you’ll spend less on heating your pool in cooler climates, and the water temperature will stay comfortable in hot climates.

3. Less maintenance

A pool cover is also practical simply because fewer things fall into the pool that have to be strained out. If you have a lot of trees in your yard, then you know what I mean. Dragging leaves out of the pool every day gets very old very quickly!

By covering the pool at night, when it’s windy, or other times you’re not using it, you can save yourself a lot of effort in the maintenance department. Not only do tree leaves frequently blow into pools, but just regular dust, sand, and small debris can travel on the wind or be kicked in from a nearby lawn or garden.

Having a pool cover in place means doing less maintenance work overall.

So, as you can see there are three good reasons for having a pool cover: they create more safety, they mean less money spent on energy, and they mean less maintenance.

TC Thorn writes on a number of home improvement topics. You can find more swimming pool cover information at her site on swimming pools. You may also want to read about swimming pool insurance to make sure you have enough coverage for safety issues homeowners face.

How to Locate And Repair Swimming Pool Leaks

Published by under Pools & Spas

It is fairly easy to notice a leak. As soon as you have opened your pool for the year, you can simply notice a leak by the water gushing out. Where the leak is coming from, can be a totally different story. Sometimes it can be easy to tell; other times it can be a bit more difficult.

The first thing you should do is make sure that the missing water is actually a leak. Although you may believe it’s a leak, it could be something else. On the whole, there are 3 causes of water loss with swimming pools – plumbing leaks, shell leaks, and evaporation. Occasionally, what you believe is a leak can be water lost from splashing – especially if you have a lot of people diving in your pool.

Evaporation is a frequent cause of water loss, and there is a method to determine if your loss of water is indeed evaporation. To find out, fill a large container full of water and put it on the first pool step. Next, remove some water from the container so that the water in the pool and the container are the same level. Let the container sit there for several days; no one should use the pool during the time.

When you check back after several days, the levels should be the same. If they have gone down, then you know that evaporation from the sun is the reason. If the pool water has dropped a great deal more than what you have in the container, you have a leak in your pool.

If you suppose that the water is going down to a pool leak, you must find where the leak is coming from. Begin looking near the pump and the filter. If you notice any wet or damp areas, you need to trace the water back and try to locate a leak. Often, the leak will be a connection with one of the pipes.

If this is not the case, then it could be a problem with the shell. In case of an aboveground pool, just look for the hole where the water is coming out of and repair it. However, if you have in ground pool, it can be a bit more difficult. You can try to inspect the shell in the pool or check surrounding areas.

If it is the shell, you should leave it to a qualified professional to fix the problem. Shells for in ground pools can be very challenging to repair.
