Ground Mole Removal Using Natural Remedies

Published by under Pest Control

Ground mole removal can be tricky if not done correctly. Ground moles are small insectivores that weigh less than a pound. Moles live underground and eat earthworms. The annoying thing about moles is that they create runways, tunnels that run the length of your yard, and dirt mounds. Moles can destroy lawns and gardens fast.

You can learn to live with moles. Moles are not dangerous; they just make your yard look terrible. If you don’t want to learn to co-exist with them peacefully, you may want to get rid of them. There are many different ways to eradicate ground moles. Ground mole removal techniques vary from trapping and poisoning to flooding and the strange vinegar and pickle juice home remedies.

The most popular ways to get rid of moles is by trapping and poisoning them. But there are a few handy ways to get rid of moles by using cheap home remedies.

Castor Oil

Castor oil will change the flavor and the smell of the insects, earth worms and dirt. The mole will believe that the earthworms are not edible and will leave. To do this you would need to measure how many square feet you are dealing with. Then get a large bag of castor oil granules. For every one thousand square feet spread one pound of castor oil granules.

Flushing

Another great way to do a ground mole removal is to flush it out. First you would have to find the most active runways. Try stomping on the runways and when you find an area that collapses, chances are you found a good runway. If within 24 hours the tunnel has been fixed it is a high active area for the mole. Using your hose at full force put in a mole hole and let the water flow. The mole will get flooded out and will leave. Don’t do this if you have many runways since it can collapse your entire yard and fill it with mud.

Small Dogs

Some breeds are meant for digging in holes. The smaller the dog the better they are at sniffing out moles. The dog should be able to locate the mole quickly and dig it out. The mole will either flee, or be killed by the little pup.

Mole Hunting

This is a fun way to catch and kill moles, but it can be hard to do without experience. Mole hunting involves finding the mole itself. You would have to spend a lot of time learning the runways and see the different patterns the mole makes its trails. When you have learned the runways, go back every day to inspect the tunnels for expansion. When you have found a tunnel that is being worked on grab a shovel and hammer. You may need to watch for the subtle movements in the grass and dirt. When you find the perfect spot, stab the shovel into the dirt quickly about an inch ahead of the moving dirt, where the mole would be working. Then proceed to flip the mole out of the ground. Kill it quickly with the hammer or the shovel. You may need to practice this many times.

These home remedies for ground moles work well to get rid of moles, but they are not recommended by professionals. If you are willing to spend a little money some good solutions for ground mole removal are poisoning, trapping or ultrasonic vibrations.

Bed Bug Dog

Published by under Pest Control

A bed bug dog is trained to detect the location of bed bugs in infested places. These adorable but accurate doggies know their work well.

A bed bugs dog has proved to be a great help to keep the tricky pests at bay. These bed bug detector dogs have an accuracy level of 90-95%; moreover, they just need a few minutes before they bark to a conclusion! It won’t be wrong if I say that bed bugs dogs are back in business.

The case of a bed bug cat is somewhat different. The silica gel found in cat litter can be used to eliminate bed bugs. It needs to be powdered and then sprinkled in bed bug affected areas, which will stick to the bed bugs and eventually dehydrate them.

Moving on to some miniature calamities that affect these cute pups, it is a must that you go through the following details affecting your dog.

Fleas top our list of pet terrorisers. The dog flea or Ctenocephalides canis primarily survives on the blood of your favourite pet i.e. dogs. When bitten by flea dog may develop intense itching, inflammation and infections. In many cases, fleas are said to be the carrier of diseases like Anaemia, cucumber tapeworm etc. Chiggers are Arachnids. They show a parasitic behaviour when in their larval stage; when fully grown harvest mites, they survive on plants. Chiggers attach themselves to the body of the host and feeds on skin fluids. When attacked by a chigger dog may experience severe itching, while the chigger mite feeds on skin cells for days together. Ticks are found in areas where there are tall grasses and shrubs etc. That is how they come across your puppies, which play around in the woods. If bitten by a tick dog falls prey to many tick-borne diseases such as Lyme disease, Ehrlichiosis, Babesiosis, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and neurological disease in dogs called Tick paralysis. Dog mites can hide and survive anywhere in the fur of a dog. When bit by mites dog tends to develop sores, itchiness and skin infections. Ear mites, Scabies, mange and walking dandruff are all various types of dog mites.

An infected scabies dog gets irresistible itchiness and loses a lot of hair. Scabies is a skin infection caused by itch mites and is highly contagious, even to humans. Poorly nourished dogs are more likely to contract lice. When captured by lice dog gets itching sensation all through the body. Sucking lice feed on a dog’s blood, while biting lice survive on dead skin flakes.

Such are the tiny but annoying threats that your dog may get to suffer. Hence, keep your dog safe, keep him clean.

Blood Sucking Bed Bugs And Anemia

Published by under Pest Control

So, the big question is can bed bugs cause anemia? In an easy to understand question let me say yes they can. In this article I will delve into what anemia is, how to recognize it, how to treat it, and just how can these parasitic blood suckers cause anemia.

Here is a little background on our friend, the common bed bug, cimex lectularius. He is know as a parasite, which means he feeds on a host for his nourishment in order to live and reproduce. They usually feed on human blood, which means we are his host. These little blood suckers have a life cycle that goes through seven distinct stages. In the first stage the bed bug is an egg laid by it’s mother. This egg cycle lasts twelve days and then the baby parasite is born. The second cycle in cimex lectularius life is called the first stage larvae. In this stage the larva has one job and that is to find a human host, feed on his or her blood, molt it’s skin, and hibernate til the next feeding. At this time the insect is about 1.5 millimeters long. The third stage of bed bug life is called the second stage larvae. Here the blood sucker has one job also, to feed on human blood, molt, and hibernate. The fourth, fifth, and sixth stages of cimex lectularius is the same as the last two. It is either feeding on human blood, growing and molting it’s skin, or hibernating. The seventh stage is the most important for the bed bugs life-cycle. In this stage the females lay their eggs and reproduce. A female can lay up to 200 eggs in her lifetime. It takes only about fifty days from an egg into a full grown female. As you can see two bed bugs can quickly increase into a huge infestation. It is this huge infestation of blood sucking parasites that can cause anemia.

Now let’s delve into what is anemia, how to recognize it, and how it is treated.

In basic, easy to understand terms anemia is a low level of red blood cells in your blood. This is called your hemogloban level. Hemolgloben levels are different in men and women. Men usually have a slightly higher hemoglobin level than women. A normal level of hemoglobin is higher than 13.5 gram/100ml. A normal hemoglobin levelin women more than 12.0 gram/100ml. Anything under these levels in men and women is considered anemia.

So, how do you recognize if you have anemia? Some symptoms include being tired a lot, easily getting fatigue even without strenuous activity, you may feel your heart racing at times, hair loss, having a general feeling of not being well, a shortness of breadth, and you may have heart problems. Anemia, if not treated, can cause severe health issues.

Now we know what anemia is and how to recognize it, what causes it. There are two main causes of this disease. One is a decrease in the production of your red blood cells and the other is having a loss of blood on a consistent level. Other causes are from too much alcohol(being alcoholic) and being a strict vegitarian where you are not getting enough iron in your diet.

So, if you think you have anemia how can you have it treated? The doctor may prescribe a change in your diet or lifestyle, such as, iron rich foods, iron pills, or to stop drinking alcohol. In severe cases you may need a blood transfussion. If your anemia is caused by being bitten by bed bugs then you need to have your infestation pinpointed and exterminated.

Now we know that if you have a huge infestation of these blood sucking parasites feeding on you it can cause health issues. So, in a nutshell, yes bed bugs can cause anemia.

Pesticide Resistant Bedbug Problems

Published by under Pest Control

A combination of pesticide and non-pesticide approaches is one of the best eradication methods for managing a bedbug infestation. Historically effective pesticides include pyrethroids, malathion, and dichlorvos; however their use raises concerns of the negative health effects they have on humans. In addition, bedbugs have a significantly increased resistance to pesticides. It is also recommended to use mechanical approaches, such as heat wrapping or treating the mattresses and vacuuming up the bedbugs themselves. Although carbamate insecticide propoxur has proven to be highly toxic towards bedbugs, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has not officially approved the chemicals for indoor use due to its potentially toxic effect on children after chronic exposure.

Pesticides such as DDT, organophosphates, and pyrethroid are starting to become less effective due to their growing resistance rate. As a result, the use of synthetic pyrethroid and the pryrrole insecticide chlorfenapyr has become a growing interest. Insect growth regulators may also be used, such as hydroprene (or Gentrol). Bedbugs found in Arkansas are reported to be highly resistant to DDT, while studies conducted in Africa show that DDT causes the bedbugs to be more active and productive. Infestations sampled across the United States proved to be one thousand times more resistant to pyrethroids compared to laboratory bedbugs. Due to nerve cell mutations, bedbugs in New York City are 264 times more resistant to deltamethrin than the bedbugs in Florida.

By using a mitochondrial DNA marker within a population genetics study of bedbugs throughout the United States, Australia, and Canada, evidence was found to support high levels of genetic variation with the species. However, no genetic variations were observed within the nuclear RNA marker. As a result of insecticide control during the 1940′s and 1950′s, many expected the bedbug populations to undergo a genetic bottleneck effect, however that was not the case. A genetic bottleneck, or population bottleneck, is an evolutionary occurrence in which a significant percentage of a species or population is killed off and ultimately prevented from reproducing.

The easiest way to kill Bed Bugs and Scabies is to use the proper treatments that actually work, I realize this is a problem that requires urgent attention, so if you want to get rid of your bed bugs visit www.BugBedTreatment.com and if you think you have scabies you can visit www.ScabiesHomeTreatment.com

Dealing With Bedbugs

Published by under Pest Control

When it comes to dealing with bedbugs, there are many ways to go about this process.

For instance, if you have got birds or bats around your home, then maybe the bedbugs are coming from them. In that case, you would need to treat them for possible infestations.

Sometimes, encasing of the bed is done. The mattress and box spring can be encased in a proactive cover; these covers are sold by some pest control firms. They are also available in retail outlets. As soon as the encasing has been done and you have zipped it shut, the bed bugs trapped inside will die – unless you unzip it.

Sometimes, it might be a good idea to keep a new bed encased, this prevents any bugs from getting into the crevices and cracks between the mattresses. The surface is kept clean and devoid the area of any bugs. However, do remember that encasements do not prevent the bedbugs from crawling on top of them.

Bedbugs can be found generally in any nook or cranny of the bedroom – sometimes, they can inhabit the carpets and linen, books, and even the mattresses. They come out during the nighttime, suck the blood from humans, and then go back to their hiding places.

It is a good idea to run a thorough check for bedbugs in your house – with a bright flashlight, search every part of your home – go through the cracks and crevices in the wall well, and don’t leave anything near your bed unchecked. It is also a good idea to clean your apartment thoroughly – watch out for dirty and damp places which are good hiding places for bedbugs. The linen should be washed in hot water, and you should vacuum the carpet edges, the floor cracks, the mattress, the base-boards and also the switch plates, not to mention the furniture.

Ticks Are One Complete Headache For Everyone

Published by under Pest Control

It is unfortunate that even in these modern times, ticks in one form or another, will always cause us humans a problem or two. In the worst instances people may even find themselves hospitalized because of the after effects of having a tick bite. But there are several precautions that people can take to cut down on the possibility of being bitten in the first place.

First, for those who are unaware of what a tick bite looks like, people should look out for some symptoms which may accompany the bite. Although the bite itself may not be noticed, the symptoms that follow will normally show themselves in flu like symptoms. Aching joints or complete paralysis are possible and if anyone has been recently to a wooded area or somewhere where ticks are known to inhabit should seek out medical advice immediately.

The American dog tick, as with other species too, can cause a multitude of problems in people. Neck and head pain or rashes are very common but are not the only pointer to the presence of a bite. Indeed, many people have heard of the ‘bulls eye’ rash that can accompany the bite but this does not always appear. It is because some of these symptoms can appear rather vague that most people do not look for medical attention until their infections have progressed to advanced stages. This then is why some people get terribly sick when they have been bitten by this tick.

Although it is virtually impossible to get rid of ticks in the wild, it is possible to take some precautions to make sure that the person does not get bitten. These include wearing clothes that cover the arms and legs when hiking or camping in the woods. Wearing light colors will also make it easier for ticks to be seen if they happen to attach themselves to the clothing.

Tucking trousers into socks or making sure that they are secured around the ankles mean that the tick does not get access to bare flesh as well. Long hair too should be tucked up under a hat and those who do not have long hair should also consider wearing one too.

Repellents are another good idea particularly for the limbs and lower body but then, when leaving a tick infested area, check out all the skin to make sure that no bites are missed. This is where close friends come in handy so that the back and the back of the head can be inspected too.

Wash all clothes thoroughly after leaving a known tick territory and do not place them with other clothes prior to doing this. Also make sure that pets are not left to rummage around in the undergrowth when you take them out on walks. There are some great animal tick products on the market so take advantage of shampoos and treatments regularly.

Finally, if a tick is spotted, pull out the head backwards with tweezers to avoid squeezing the juices into the wound. After this, seek medical aid so that nothing untoward happens.

Termite Poison Gas Treatment of Human Dwellings Is No Longer Necessary

Published by under Pest Control

For too many decades Pest Control Companies have claimed that whole structure poison gas fumigation for termites is the only sure way of treatment. However, The only thing sure now, is the continued thousands of dollars of cost billed homeowners for each unnecessary dangerous treatment that could be done in stead with available safe proven non-chemical treatment procedures.

There are many effective alternative non-chemical termite treatment methods that have been developed the last two decades. Most of the methods are non intrusive and can be completed successfully in one day with no mandatory occupant over night move out. So why is it that the non chemical less costly treatment procedures have not been sold more to the public?

It has been regular practice for U.S. termite companies, Big and Small, to simply sell the homeowner a not always necessary complete poison gas fumigation of their home to kill termites. This has come about through the years, mostly out of habit and because of the extreme profits made. From an economical point of view, chemical poison gas is less costly for a company’s operating expense, however that should never be more important than priceless human life.

The good news is, homeowners no longer need to be victimized by termite companies selling unnecessary poison gas fumigation. Public education is the key to safer termite treatments. Be cautious of any company who tells you that only whole structure poison gas fumigation will take care of your termite problem. Trust only a firm that also offers non-chemical alternative treatments and are knowledgeable about them.

Author is a retired structural pest engineer expert. During his 30 years work in the industry he has just about seen and done it all. Karl is also an active environmental advocate for the increased use of alternative no poison gas, no-chemical safe green treatment methods.

Pest Control – Bedbugs

Published by under Pest Control

Pest control can be a big deal no matter where you live. Farmers spend time and effort as well as money getting rid of pests in the crops, hoe owners tend to obsess about pests in the lawn and apartment dwellers have to deal with not only their own pest problems but often neighbors and previous tenant’s pests as well.

One pest you may have to deal with in your efforts is the bedbug. Pest control for bedbugs is not uncommon these days although many people may mistake these tiny creatures for something else.

The first thing you need to do if you suspect a bedbug problem is to verify that you do have them. Bedbugs are about the size of an apple seed about 1/5 of an inch long, rusty red or maroon in color and has a flattened body. Most often you will find thee pests in your bed because human blood is their food of choice. Look for them around seams and pillows. If you see small red spots on your sheets and pillows chances are you have them.

Control for bed bugs is important to a good night sleep. While they do not carry any disease they do bite and the bites will itch and leave a rash just like flea bites do.

Keeping a clean home is no guarantee you will not at some point have an infestation of these pests. Bedbugs are excellent travelers and can be brought home from almost anywhere by anyone. A new piece of furniture or a guest can introduce them to your home and then you need to get rid of them. Some people advise removal of the bed as the best control for bedbugs but they will still be there as the bed is not the only place these tiny creatures can hide.

Once bedbugs get into your home they are notoriously difficult tenants to remove. A treatment for them includes a vigorous housecleaning, visit from a pest control specialist and diligent follow up inspections to make sure they do not come back. Some tips for keeping them from driving you insane is to use zip on dust mite pillow and mattress coverings.

It’s a Rat’s Life

Published by under Pest Control

Rat populations are rising. Fact. There is no current accurate count of their population, and there never has been a good educated guess; however city pest control companies are noticing a more than modest rise in the pests’ numbers.

Population estimates range in the region of just less than one rat per person in London, with countryside and other cities at other ratios. Some estimates approximate that there are 36 people for each rat, and others state that there are 12 rats for every person. Whatever the statistic, they are a nuisance, causing damage to property, trawling mess across our gardens, and spreading their infected fleas – which once carried the bubonic plague. Currently, there are risks of the vermin carrying Wields Disease and Salmonella.

Various news reports over the past year have alerted the general public to the cuts in government spending, making the rats life just that little bit easier. Weekly bin collections in many areas were cut to fortnightly collections and the ongoing cuts in council pest control departments is seen by many as a joke. Many London boroughs, such as Brent, as well as many county councils have completely closed their pest control offices in a bid to tighten up their huge government loans.

Residents in Tunbridge Wells were recently told to simply call a contactor from the Yellow pages when they recently called their long standing, but now closed pest offices to enquire about arranging some of the previously free pest control. Pest control companies in the area reported dramatically increasing call-outs relating to rats. It’s also worth noting that in the news recently someone had correlated the growth in the rat population to global warming. True or not, related effects can be seen globally. Other sites recently reported a 50-100% rise in pest businesses in Singapore when the recent wet season forced the burrowing rats above ground. Some sceptics believe that we may come face-to-face with the unwanted pests on local soil if we have our own wet summer as they could potentially be forced out of their usual hiding places.

Residents of Co. Dublin already think that they are victims to this increase in rat numbers, coupled with the apparent tightening of their local council’s budgets for pest control. The residents are now taking pest control into their own hands, using rat bait stations – although some residents have just opted to use a shovel instead!

Councils have a duty to monitor and act on pest problems in their area; however it is down to the Health and Safety Executive to really act on the majority of cases. In the above example, the HSE did place and monitor three separate traps, however they were not enough.

A study in New York, where the rat population is particularly problematic has shown that poisoning rats dramatically reduces their numbers. Initially, this means competition for food is reduced, spurring on mating and reproduction, thus increasing the population up to and above the previous level. Rats do not find it hard to prove this fact considering a healthy specimen has no reason not to produce more less than 100 offspring in a good year.

Experts the world over are now recommending a ‘prevention is the solution’ technique of dealing with the obvious problem. Storing waste in closed dustbins and waste refuse centres will limit the food supply to the rats. Keeping your gardens clean and streets free from food scraps, combined with the council dropping their recently adopted lassiez faire attitude will also help tackle the problem.

To prevent an infestation near your property, rat poison kits can be used just in case. They are inexpensive, and could nip any problems in the bud before they mature.

Get Rid of Mosquitoes

Published by under Pest Control

The World Heath Organization estimates that there are up to 500 million Malaria and other Mosquito borne disease cases each year and 1 million resulting in death. Mosquito borne disease is present in over 100 countries and territories. Almost 50% of the world’s population is at risk and that includes the USA, Europe, Scandinavia and other countries you might not suspect. Wherever you live, you may be at risk of contracting long term illness or death through mosquito bite. However, simple, cost effective solutions are available.

Only the female mosquito causes bites. The male does not need the protein from blood to fertilize eggs and prefers sap from plants. Mosquitoes are one of the greatest threats to human life from the insect world but… they can be controlled with the right equipment and it does not have to be expensive. Mosquitoes carry a number of very serious diseases which you should be aware of. Here we look briefly at some of these diseases and their symptoms:

Dengue Fever

Dengue Fever and viruses produce a variety of illness ranging from a viral syndrome to severe and fatal hemorrhagic disease. Symptoms may begin with fever (up to 105 degrees Fahrenheit), severe headache, retro-orbital (behind the eye) pain, severe joint and muscle pain, nausea and vomiting, and rash within five or six days after a person has been bitten by an infected mosquito. Three or four days after the onset of the fever, the rash may cover most of the body with a further rash later in the disease. The most usual time for Dengue fever is after the rainy season in tropical and sub tropical areas. There is no fail proof treatment for Dengue Fever and the best method of preventing this and other viruses and diseases is by avoiding mosquitos or trapping and killing them whenever possible.

Ross River Fever or Virus

Ross River virus is one of a group of viruses called arboviruses (or arthropod-borne viruses), which are spread mainly by biting and blood-sucking insects. Most common in rural areas and sometimes causing a flu-like symptoms with joint pains, rash and fever, it is not fatal. Often people infected with the virus will not develop symptoms.

• Some people will have flu-like symptoms including fever, chills, headache and pains in the muscles and joints which can become swollen, and joint stiffness may be particularly noticeable in the morning.
• Sometimes a rash occurs on the body, arms or legs and usually disappears after a week to 10 days.
• A general feeling of tiredness or weakness may also occur at times during the illness affecting work performance and concentration.

West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus infects humans, birds, horses, bats and other mammals. The virus can cause the development of neuro-invasive diseases, the most severe type of illness caused by West Nile Virus. This attacks the nervous system. West Nile encephalitis is inflammation of the brain, while West Nile meningitis is inflammation of the membrane around the brain and the spinal cord. West Nile fever causes fever, headache, fatigue, aches and pains, and rash. West Nile meningo-encephalitis results in inflammation of the brain and the surrounding membrane.

Malaria
Malaria is spread by an infected mosquito bite with symptoms including tremor chills, head and muscle aches, vomiting, fatigue, nausea, and diarrhea. Malaria can also enlarge the spleen and liver and cause anemia and jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes). Death may occur from general weakness, anemia, or clogged cerebral tissue vessels, kidney failure, seizures, mental confusion, coma, and death if not treated very quickly.

Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease is serious and potentially fatal. It is caused by parasitic worms, microfilariae, that can flourish in the arteries of the lungs and in the right side of the heart of dogs, cats and other species of mammals, including wolves, foxes, ferrets, sea lions and (in rare instances) humans.

Heartworm disease is caused by mosquito bites which transfer microfilariae from one animal’s circulatory system to another. The heartworm migrates to the heart and out into the pulmonary arteries where it mates and reproduces. The adult heartworm several inches long and generates a strong inflammatory response and a tendency for blood to inappropriately clot. The lining of the artery becomes damaged within days of the worm’s arrival. If enough worms are present, the heart must work extra hard to pump blood through the plugged up arteries. The arteries expand and bend causing clotting and Aneurysms. Symptoms include coughing and inability to exercise, nosebleeds (due to abnormal clotting in the lung), heart failure, pulmonary hypertension, heart muscle thickening, arrhythmia (which may result in sudden death).

How to Prevent Mosquito Bites

There are many preventative measures that should be taken to protect your family and your pets from mosquito bites. Make sure there are no areas of standing water around your home for mosquitoes to breed in. Some repellants are fine for humans but not recommended for pets due to their tendency to ingest them by licking themselves. Clean your gutters and any other areas where water can gather.

The most effective solution is also one of the least expensive. Mosquito Traps are very efficient, inexpensive and simple to empty. The best traps in the world use a combination of attractants to draw the mosquitos, in large numbers, into the trap. These attractants should all be present to be the most effective… flashing LED lights, a fluorescent light bulb and a chemical brew that contains lactic acid and octenol that mimics the smell of human skin.

You can buy these traps online for a surprisingly small amount however always make sure that the trap incorporates an octenol and lactic acid brew as well as lights to attract mosquitoes.
