The first Amish to arrive in the United States settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Now there are many large settlements in the U.S., primarily in Holmes and adjoining counties in northeast Ohio, and in northeastern Indiana’s Elkhart and surrounding counties. These communities are surrounded by forest stocked with White and Red Oak, as well as Cherry, Maple, Hickory, and Black Walnut. Building on a tradition of self-sufficiency, the Amish took full advantage of the bounty of wood surrounding them to build their own furniture.

Over the course of the past century, the primary Amish occupation of farming has been increasingly supplemented by woodworking. In the beginning, Amish furniture was only publicly available through direct purchase from an Amish shop or nearby retailer. Now with the advent of the Internet, Amish craftsmen cooperate with “English” businessmen to globally distribute their goods and we can all enjoy the beauty of Amish furniture in our own homes. It is first plain sawn or quartersawn, either in an “English” or Amish mill. The plain-sawn technique has the advantage of being faster and produces a wide and long open grain effect, with long dark lines revealing the growth rings. These growth ring lines are rough to the touch, thereby creating a textured surface.

Generally, an oak dining table is constructed from plain-sawn oak. On the other hand, quartersawn oak is prized for its beautiful rayflake grain designs and its resistance to the effects of atmospheric moisture. Thus this cut of white oak is very durable, and when properly finished, it will likely not rot, decay, cup, twist, or crack.

However, the quartersawn milling technique is extremely labor intensive. First, the whole log needs to be cut lengthwise into quarter rounds. Next, the quarter-round lengths are cut perpendicular to the growth rings, rotating the length 90 degrees back and forth with each cut. The result is a feathered or furry grain that is both beautiful and strong. This process has been made easier by the recent use of diesel generators, which are an allowed form of electricity because the Amish retain control of the power source.

Once the mill has processed the wood, Amish craftsmen then carefully choose the lumber most suitable for each unique piece of furniture. Using his eye for design, he will select pieces that complement each other to create a lasting masterpiece for any home. The Amish craftsman uses generations-old techniques in the construction of each custom piece. For drawers, dovetail joints are used, and slats and support pieces are joined in the mortise and tenon fashion. The Amish take special care with their finish work, following multiple sanding and finish-application steps. When an Amish piece of wood furniture is properly cared for, it will retain its original finish for a lifetime.

Mass-produced imitation Amish furniture stands in direct contrast to handmade solid wood Amish craftsmanship and is usually made of particle board and veneer. Carefully inspect any prospective purchases, as there are many of these imitation Amish-style furnishing currently being sold on the market. When you purchase a genuine Amish furniture piece, you are making an investment that will grace your home for generations.

The Arts & Crafts furniture movement is associated with elegant oak furniture and oak dining furniture. However, wood isn’t the only material associated with the era, copper became the premier metal for decorative ornament during the American Arts and Crafts movement, as it was finer and more attractive than iron, and less expensive and easier to work with than silver. Copper decorative wares such as hand-hammered lamps, chargers and candlesticks are iconic collectibles now, but copper is and was an ideal metal for architectural use. Builders use copper sheeting for downspouts, half-round gutters, and flashing. Copper is particularly adept at straddling the line between function and art. At Craftsman Farms, you can find stunning, motto-embossed fireplace hoods that are among the era’s most memorable works.

Copper is considered the oldest metal in use but is enjoying renewed popularity. Copper can be found almost everywhere in and around the house, from reproduction copper and mica lamps to copper basins in either the pantry or the garden. Although there are many beautiful reproductions of the objets d’art so fondly associated with the original movement, copper is also increasingly being used for functional items like range hoods, sinks, lighting, and architectural trim.

Copper is most ubiquitous in the kitchen. Especially popular are hammered copper sinks. Crafted out of heavy-gauge copper, these sinks are usually chemically patinated to stabilize the finish. Copper also creates a dramatic look when used for range and fireplace hoods.

Copper also adds a smart touch to faucets and decorative hardware. For the most part, these fittings are constructed of brass and bronze, and then finished with a coppery hue. Copper is a fairly soft metal. If left on its own, it will develop an attractive patina or coloration with age. Unfortunately, fingerprints and other human contact will make it blotchy and unattractive. That’s why patination is always recommended, a stable coating that creates the look of age.

Copper is a wonderful medium for decorative lamps and light fixtures, especially when treated to hand hammering and patination by a real artist. It can be paired with mica or art glass for a beautiful result. For today’s reproduction vases, chargers, and other tabletop accessories, you can easily find a hammered finish, but remember that some work is better than others. The Michoacán region in Mexico produces wonderfully affordable hand-worked copper. If you want to look closer to home, you can find artisans who imbue their own sense of the Arts and Crafts spirit in chargers, candlesticks, and vessels that often closely copy period originals. Other branch out in other directions, such as Repoussé, which is a hand-worked and hand-tooled technique that creates more figural, three-dimensional results and requires a superior level of craftsmanship.

Copper has also found a place in the garden, not only in birdbaths and fountains, but also in the water-channeling devices known as rain chains, which have channeled and stored rain water for hundreds of years. As a classic example of this, Frank Lloyd Wright incorporated a sculptured rain chain in one of his Usonian houses. These long linear skeins of rings, inverted bells, or fluted cups are certainly considered both a useful and beautiful addition to any garden.

Making a change to your bedroom doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. It doesn’t matter if your working on a complete makeover or just adding a couple of accessories; a little creative thinking will make all the difference.

This is what you’ll need to get start:

Buy a few accessory pillows for $10 each (or less) in a new color palette. Take pillows of similar color, mix up the textures –like silk and chenille – and you’ve instantly go yourself a sophisticated monochromatic look. You can get a romantic feel by creating a layer of pillows with larger pillows in the back and smaller ones in the front.

A fresh coat of paint can make a huge difference in the look of room and its fairly inexpensive to do. Think repainting the entire room is too big of project? Then break it down by focusing and painting only one wall and experimenting with a single area of the room.

Older more detailed closet doors can be spruced up by painting the frame in a neutral color and the inset in a dark color. Painting furniture is also a great way to give the room new life. Give an old dresser a faux antique finish or sponge paint a cabinet.

A new headboard can be rather expensive. Want to try something bold and different? Pick up a picket fence or ornate wrought iron fence at your local flea market. Bed skirts make most beds look soft and sophisticated and are an inexpensive decorating investment. They’re available in several color, textures and patterns. Soft and neutral colors give you the best of both versatility and beauty. It should not be the focal point of your bed but simply the perfect finishing touch.

Treating your windows is much easier than you would think. A swag at the top of the window is inexpensive (depending on your fabric choice) and not too dramatic. It’s the perfect way to add a famine touch to the room. You can place bicycle or plants in the ceiling. Or opt for just a blind and an inexpensive garland or floral accent at the top of the window. Another look we love is a simple curtain rod with some trendy finials and simple ready made drapes. Ikea, Kmart, Target, JCPenney and Pottery Barn carry a large selection of all of these items.

Do you have a canopy or four-poster bed in need of a new look? Adorn the poles with fabric to achieve that *pond* affect, where the fabric appears to create a *pond* at the base. Getting this effect is easy, all you need is to add about an extra 20 inches before it’s cut. Don’t’ forget the perfect decorative item, candles. While most people go with white candles, since they’re the most sophisticated, consider clustering colored candles to create a focal point on a night stand or dresser. Group your candles in batches of 3, 5 or 9 – avoid even numbers since they tend to be boring. Try using a variety of different candle heights and gather them on a wall shelf.

Framed posters, artwork and mirrors are an easy and inexpensive way to give a room an new look, but make sure your choices complement your current décor. Keep it simple with a neutral colored frame – black, gold, brown or white. Placing shelves is a quick way to liven things up. Collections are perfect for displaying on a wall shelf, but try to stay away from small items. Placing a lot of tiny accessories will leave the shelf looking cramped and cluttered. You can experiment with a grouping of vases with flowers or use the self to hold up a framed poster or painting.

In order for a home to feel complete it needs some good furniture. Quality furniture is the result of loving care and hard work. Crafting good quality furniture is a tradition that it has been handed down from generation to generation, perfected over time in order to provide the lovely pieces many people enjoy in their homes. Of all furniture pieces that we have in our house is, but cases can take up more space then other pieces. Some of the larger bookcases can be considered to be among the most gargantuan of home furnishings. Some of these huge bookcases are so big that they’d need to be moved into a room in pieces and assembled once inside.

For a home to have some real character, it is critical to have at least a few good quality items of furniture. Some of the most dominant pieces of furniture in a home are the dining room table and in many cases the bookcases. The bookcase will often reflect who we are, and tell a little bit about our education and our taste. As we begin to fill bookcases the items can become incredibly telling about what we do, where we have been, what we like, and what we know. Of course bookcases are normally filled with books, but many people use their bookcase to display their prized possessions like diplomas, daily portraits, trinkets and mementos. When we look beyond what we fill it with, the piece of furniture itself can be most telling of all.

There are all sorts of bookcases, making it possible to match nearly any taste and home the core. Traditionally, there wasn’t very much variations among the bookcases, but today things are different. You can find bookcases with wood or glass doors, barrister, latter, or open bookcases. Of course there are very few things that can be compared to an antique oak bookcase. The there is nothing that can compare to the detail and intricacy of the craftsmanship, the durability and quality of the wood, and the exactitude of the union’s.

An antique old bookcase is something that people prize and admire. The value alone of an antique look case is enough for most people to desire one for their own homes. Regardless of the value, you need to consider whether or not it will fit well in your home. Will the color of the wood go well with the overall theme of your home? Does its size present any problem; is it too tall or too short? Never rush in to purchasing a bookcase, wait until you find the perfect one for your home. When you see the right one, you will know it.

Keep in mind that you will need to find a solid item with strong shelves if you plan to use your book case to display books. Don’t buy an old piece of junk that will fall apart within weeks of putting things on its shelves.

Another consideration, if your buying your bookshelves for a home office make sure that you can always go back and getting matching pieces like oak desks, filing cabinets or credenzas.

A dining room table is a special place for families to gather around. Whether it is for special events or creating day-to-day memories, a durable, heirloom-quality dining set is an important group of furniture that can set the stage for unforgettable moments throughout the lives of your loved ones. The best dining room furniture are those constructed from solid, natural materials and are built with close attention paid to every detail because that is what your family deserves. Amish dining room furniture is constructed following old world traditions meaning each unit is a work of art, handcrafted from organic material to create an atmosphere of purity where your family can relax and enjoy each other’s company.

There are so many family happenings that take place around the dining table from childhood to adulthood. Multigenerational families share the events of their day or plan the following day as sit around the dining table and enjoy meals together each night. Other daily rituals are also treasured such as a parent helping his/her child with homework or crafts at the oak dining room table or the joy (or sometimes chore) of setting the table each night with beautiful placemats and eating utensils. It is around the dining table that families are able to function as a whole and strengthen their bond.

The Amish are known for their strong family values, dedication to hard work and their hand-crafted, heirloom-quality furniture. Amish furniture can be passed down from parents to children to grandchildren unlike most mass-produced furniture of today that’s not made to sustain so many years of use. Most furniture on the market is built from laminates and veneers and would not be able to withstand the wear and tear of family usage. The materials used for mass-production often discolor, stain, peel and the adhesives used weaken with time.

When Amish dining room furniture is passed down to children and grandchildren, not only are they receiving a table and chairs but also the memories that are associated with them. They will remember the meals, the fun activities, the life-changing announcements and of course the parents or grandparents that are passing those memories along. While making new memories, the lives and events shared around that dining table will be re-lived by future generations.

Amish dining tables are available in a huge array of sizes and in round and rectangular shapes that will suit your home perfectly. Several retailers also offer custom-made dining sets. Amish dining tables are made to hold leaves that allow them to extend up to 168”! Family gatherings wouldn’t have to be split up into different tables with a table long enough to seat them all. These tables also shrink down to sizes that are perfect for daily use.

Amish-built dining room sets aren’t just for the Amish anymore and through retailers are becoming extremely accessible. Available in a variety of timeless styles, finishes, sizes and shapes, their high-quality sets are perfect to create and share family memories around that can be passed down through generations.
