Every building has both positive and negative energies. These energies form in patterns when a building is constructed and can have a positive or negative impact on the occupants. Classical feng shui calls the energies that make up the energy patterns “flying stars”. In every building there are nine different energy patterns. One in each of the eight compass sections and the center. The nine different patterns in a building each have three flying stars. The way the three flying stars interact with each other creates either a positive or negative energy pattern in that section.

Some examples of their bad influences are illness, pain, miscarriage, infertility, depression, anxiety, fire, theft, financial problems, arguments, relationship problems, and divorce. Positive influences could be prosperity, good health, fertility, success, fame, and happiness.

Ideally its’ best to spend your time where there’s positive energy and avoid negative energy. But this might not be possible since there is both positive and negative in every building. If your bedroom or work area has a negative energy pattern, the negativity can be reduced or “cured” by adding the necessary feng shui element. That would be either water, wood, fire, earth, or metal depending on the pattern.

There are 144 different energy pattern combinations and your building has one of those combinations. It’s not difficult to find out what kind of positive and negative energies are in your home or office, you just need the compass degree the building faces and the year of construction. For example, the energy patterns of a home built in 2009 facing 26 degrees northeast has a different energy pattern than a home built in 1989 facing the same way.

There are several books available that can help you determine what kind of energies you’re living and working in and how to balance them. “Creating A Haven: Simple Steps For A Healthy And Nurturing Home” is available at Barnes & Noble.com and Amazon.com.

Robyn Bentley is a feng shui consultant and author of Creating A Haven: Simple Steps For A Healthy And Nurturing Home.

In the last few years, it has become more and more common to see Feng Shui practiced inside the home, in gardens, in office spaces, and even in cars. This is not surprising since Feng Shui designs do bring about a certain amount of balance and harmony…at least for humans. But what about your pets? Can you Feng Shui your pet’s environment for better health and harmony?

The short answer is yes. Chi flows through all life, humans and pets included. What is good for the human in the house is also good for the pet. Take for example, clutter. Too much clutter in your dog’s sleeping area for example, will bring him disharmony. So remove any clutter around their sleeping area to allow chi to flow.

Another practical thing you can do for your pet is to look at where you are placing their bed. Avoid placing it near a door, especially two doors. According to Feng Shui principles, good and bad energy flow through doors. You don’t want the good and the bad energy to flow right through your best friend Fido.

In addition, don’t place their bed near a bathroom. This is an area where a lot of energy flows in and out of. In practical terms, you don’t want your dog’s bed to be in the way. If it is in front of or near a door or a bathroom, there will be a lot of foot traffic. This can disrupt their rest and privacy.

The other practical advice is to not place their bed in front of a mirror. Mirrors are an energy reflector. You wouldn’t want to channel all that energy onto your poor pet while they are trying to rest.

For more advice that goes beyond the Feng Shui mirror and your pets, visit http://www.fengshuimirror.com where Christine Tran shares her practical knowledge on this ancient and recently vogue art of Feng Shui.

A frequent question asked of feng shui consultants is whether or not they are also psychic. Some people assume that a feng shui expert visits a property and feels or senses what is wrong with the energy of the space. While a tiny percentage of the analysis may rely on intuition, the majority of the evaluation should be based on time-tested calculations and tangible observations.

As an example, you do not have to be psychic to surmise that an occupant will be depressed if their home is dark, dingy, and massively cluttered. Nor do you have to be psychic to know that if a house sits at the end of a busy street, that the occupants may be unusually irritated. These are energy principles that are taught in beginner’s classes.

As well, much of what gets discussed and evaluated in a feng shui reading are things which are not obvious to the naked eye, but also learned formulas and techniques. I am not psychic, but have learned and validated that a house which faces southwest (between 203-247 degrees) and built in the in the 1930′s, is a house which can encourage occupants to become alcoholic. And there doesn’t have to be any physical evidence around to prove it.

Still, some clients expect that a feng shui consultant will possess super natural powers or at least claim to have them. This may include sensing the presence of ghosts, spirits, and specific events that have transpired at that location. In reality, everyone is intuitive but few people develop it. People should in fact follow their “gut” instincts or hunches more often. My own personal experience with people who claim to be professional psychics has been a parade of individuals who were excessively confident about their overactive imaginations. This is why I make a big point about not emphasizing any psychic abilities of my own or interjecting them into a feng shui analysis. There is so much formal training available that a person could have no intuition at all and still be able to perform a competent feng shui audit.

Kartar Diamond is a classically trained consultant, advising professionally since 1992. Her company, Feng Shui Solutions, has been a leading force is educating the world about what this misunderstood practice really is.

In order to give a different slant to the idea of Chi flow in the garden, I’ve substituted beneficial Chi flow and described it as a ‘wondrous little character called Chi’. Straight out of the imagination Chi becomes a wondrous little character that wisps and wasps around our surroundings. It flits and flickers from place to place and may choose to stay longer and is content to be in harmonious surroundings. It definitely avoids places that aren’t supportive to it and these could be described as sha or detrimental Chi places. My little character represents beneficial or Sheng Chi energy.

The little character has great qualities when it’s present. We can absorb its beneficial energies and become uplifted. The energies strengthen us and nullify the negativities that may have been pulling us down.

From the gardeners prospective, the little character likes to be where it can freely move and call the place home. A few suggestions can be listed to assist the creation of such places:

- Beneficial Chi energies move in a meandering fashion, i.e., avoiding straight lines

- Chi energy is responsive to all impacts whether sha (negative) or sheng (beneficial or positive)

- Mystery, charm and complexity enhance positive Chi energy flow and provide opportunities and diversity for the little character to find a home

- Beneficial Chi revolves around life, sounds, smells and movements. Ideally not one dominating

- Beneficial Chi is transformed by places that are moderated in shapes, colours and textures

- Our little character likes places not extreme but balanced in temperature, light and shade

- And finally it likes to move in spaces that don’t entrap it. Enjoying smooth, gentle and free transition from one space to another.

The wondrous little character doesn’t like to be frightened by rapid change preferring things to be settled and at peace with their surroundings, much like a natural place free from intrusion. It can be allusive which suggests if we want Chi to return for longer periods we need to re-tune our site for it and accept beneficial Chi flow isn’t a permanent feature of the garden, and enjoying the experience when it’s present.

I hope you enjoyed reading my article as much as I enjoyed pondering over and writing it.

Bedroom
Practice good bedroom organizing habits and you will see a huge difference in your ability to relax in your personal living space. Even a small bedroom can benefit from a Feng Shui make over. Remember, size is not as important as position and appearance. Turn your sleeping area into a place that nurtures health and well being in your home.

The Importance of the Bedroom
Those who practice Feng Shui organizational techniques know how important the bedroom is. When you implement good bedroom organize techniques, you can increase the flow of qi, or positive energies, into this often used room. Couples should design a bedroom that promotes sensual energy. In some cases, many Feng Shui practitioners believe that poor bedroom organize choices result in issues between couples. Even if you sleep alone, your bedroom should allow you to get a restful sleep, encouraged through harmonious qi.

Stick with Bedroom Basics
Some people assume that good bedroom organize habits should mean placing as many items in this room as possible. However, this can damage the flow of qi in your sleeping space. Workout equipment, televisions, and similar items can interrupt energy movement and have a negative impact on your bedroom’s ability to rejuvenate you.

If you truly want to take on a Feng Shui bedroom organize technique, then make a point to remove these extra items from your sleeping quarters. You do not have to get rid of them, but find other rooms that might be more fitting. Maybe add a workout room to your basement or garage, or place your extra television in a spare room.

Light Variation
Lighting should be a part of your bedroom organizing plan. Although this has nothing to do with making more space, a room’s illumination impacts mood. Bedrooms should be given multiple light levels. Consider adding a dimmer switch or another light fixture that offers a different quantity of light from the existing one. This gives you complete control over the atmosphere in this important space in your home. Many Feng Shui practitioners recommend candle light in the bedroom as well. If you are concerned about fire hazards, consider adding a flameless candle that still looks natural.

The Colors of Relaxation
Avoid hectic colors when choosing wall paint or accents for your bedroom. When you revamp your bedroom organizing methods to incorporate Feng Shui, only soft colors should be used. These should soothe and open up the mind. The best choices for walls in a bedroom include neutral tones. These could range from very pale hues to browns.

Furniture Placement in the Bedroom
Determine the best furniture placement in your bedroom. When you work with bedroom organize habits combined with Feng Shui, this should include an easily accessible bed. Position yours in a way that allows you to approach from either side. A pair of nightstands placed on each side of the bed is ideal. Also keep the bed shifted away from the door. Feng Shui generally states that placing the bed directly in line with the door is a poor layout choice.

Let your sleeping area work well for you! This is where you come to rest and relax, so make sure you follow the right bedroom organize tips to create a Feng Shui optimized space. You may not realize just how much your bedroom is affecting your ability to function and feel peaceful each day.

Amanda Johnson is a Clutter Free Enthusiast who enjoys helping others live a clutter free life.

When it comes to apartment buildings, they are often more complicated to analyze than a house. The house generally has one family inside or an extended family and the whole house is viewed as one unit, having one orientation. Then, each room can be micro-managed as a smaller version of the house whole house. As an example, if we discover that the northeast section of someone’s house happens to be very positive in their particular house, then the northeast section of each room in that house would have a small dose of that good quality. Simple and straightforward.

But what about an apartment building with any number of occupants? Does the chi (energy) have an intelligence to understand that these tenants are not related to each other? Should the apartment building be viewed as one giant house, where everybody inside is just occupying a room that happens to be their individual apartment? Or should each apartment be viewed as its own universe, with its own distinct orientation? These are the kinds of questions that feng shui practitioners have different opinions about. The distinctions in the analysis can include whether or not the apartment building has one big main lobby or entrance that everyone uses or in the case of certain condos and townhouses, where each person has their own separate entrance from outside. And would a common parking garage matter?

I have always taken the approach, where I make a mental note of where someone is within a building (the big picture) and then I help the client micro-manage their own apartment, with its own unique orientation, especially since this is all the client has control over. Feedback from clients confirms that often similar types of people will occupy the same building. Creative types might be an example. Perhaps you are a chef and the person who lives above you is a kitchen designer!

It is valid to note where someone’s individual apartment is within a building. If I can use the metaphor that the building is like a state or country and the individual apartments are like cities or towns. You will have the greatest potential to succeed and be healthy and happy if you are in the cleanest and most prosperous city, as opposed to the most polluted or poverty-stricken town. Over and over again, I have clients confirm for me that the people who occupy the best part of a building are doing better than those in the worst parts of the building. If I discover that my client is in a bad part of the building with no practical or affordable way to move, I try to see if they can make better use of the best parts of their individual space.
