Why Are Front Load Washing Machines More Efficient?

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Appliances

Front load washing machines are preferred by most people for a certain reason. This is because it is engineered to be more efficient in the use of electricity, water and detergent.

Let us get down to the reasons why this is a more efficient washing machine.

1. The horizontal axis construction makes it more efficient in water. Vertical axis construction needs more water. If you want to wash your clothes more efficiently, you need to fill it up enough to cover the clothes. However, the front loaders do not need as much water to be washed efficiently. Because of the tumbling rotation of the drum, it swishes and circulates water more so you do not need to fill the drum completely with water.

2. The washer drum is bigger. In comparison to the traditional top loaders, this washer does not have an agitator. The agitator usually takes up most of the space inside the drum so you cannot wash as many clothes using a top load washer. The front load washers can accommodate more clothes because it does not use an agitator. Because of that, you can lessen batches of clothes that need to be washed.

3. These washers are high efficiency washers so they really require the use high efficiency detergent in small measurements. That is because the washer is good in infusing detergent into the laundry. Too much detergent can cause suds to fill the drum completely which will then lead to the malfunctioning of the washer.

4. They are energy star complaints. All of the front loading washing machines today have energy star ratings because they should be made in such a way. That is the edict of the Department of Energy.

5. The features found in these washers save a lot on energy. You can find moisture sensors in it that detects the moisture in your laundry after the spinning cycle and measures how long it needs to stay in the dryer. This will prevent over drying of clothes which will then help you conserve much on electricity consumption.

But it is also interesting to note that there are top loaders today with similar efficiency to these washers. You might want to look for those machines if you want to save up more on electricity, water and detergent.

The booming industry of washing machines is good because we now have more choices. You should choose the ones that will really help you cut down on expenses.

Knobs – Upgrade Your Kitchen the Fast and Fun Way

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Appliances

Ready for a new look to your kitchen but you don’t want to have to go through the expense of redoing all the cabinetry? Maybe your cabinets are in great shape, but you just want a little different look. It could be a simple change of the knobs will do the trick.

If the cabinets you have in your kitchen now are the stock set that came with the house, chances are they came with a series of stock knobs or handles that aren’t as exciting or personal as you would like them to be. You probably selected the wood color and finish, but the hardware is what the factory decided to put on your set. The good news is it can be changed. Whether you have knobs currently or have drawer pulls or handles, you can still change them out for a new set.

While you may not think something as small as a few drawer knobs will be enough to change the overall look of your kitchen, you will be surprised. Sure, they’re small, but they pack a major punch when it comes to the overall look of the kitchen space. How they out from the cabinet material will change the environment.

With this in mind you need to carefully choose which knobs you want to put on your cabinetry, as they will have a large impact on the overall look of your kitchen. Take note of what other colors and elements are in use in your kitchen. Anything from appliance colors to floor tile and even themes you have put into play in this space should be taken into account when you are selecting hardware for your cabinets. You want something that goes with the look you have created, without clashing.

Another consideration to take when you are purchasing hardware for your kitchen cabinetry is the kind of use and abuse it is going to get. While there are some beautiful decorative knobs on the market, many of these are also less durable than others. If they are made of ceramic, glass and other decorative materials they have a level of fragility to them. If you are the only one using them, or you are saving those decorative ones for drawers that are out of the reach of most people this may not be a problem. But, if you have a number of children who like to run around the kitchen, banging into things and slamming your drawers and cabinets open and closed, decorative hardware may not be able to stand up to this strain.

Finally, decide how much work you want to do to install them. If you are replacing knobs that were already in place on your drawers and cabinets, most new ones will fit the same holes just fine. But, if your old cabinets had pulls or handles, those have more than one hole. You may need to either use multiple knobs (on drawers), or put a back plate behind the knob to cover the other hole (on doors). The other option is to fill the old holes, paint or finish the filled holes, and then create a new hole for the hardware.

Can You Use The Sun To Cool Your Home?

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Appliances

When you think about the sun, heat is usually the first impression one gets. A recent twist on the idea has led to the possibility of cooling your home with the sun. Seriously!

Environmental concerns are a very important factor in a number of areas and air conditioning is one of them. The wide spread use of air conditioning has created ever increasing electrical energy demands, and the power generating capacity is struggling to keep up with this demand. During demand peaks created by hot spells, there have been power outages and brown-outs in the past. One of the ideas that has been developed to cope with this problem is the use of the sun as a power source. This seems a logical concept since the sun creates the problem by creating heat. How great it would be if the sun could also provide the solution.

In Europe, the technology for using solar energy for both heating and cooling is quite advanced and many larger building have been using a form of it for years. The method used is based on the thermo-chemical process known as sorption. Sorption takes two forms. When a liquid or gas is attached to a porous, solid material it is called adsorption. When the liquid or gas is taken in by liquid or a solid, it is called absorption. The European technology involves the use of a sorbant, usually silica gel. The silica gel is heated by the sun and is dehumidified. When water vapor or steam is added to the dehumidified gel, adsorption takes place and heat is released.

Basically, when heated ambient air is drawn through the system in what is called a heat reclamation rotor, the heat is drawn out of the air, cooling it. The cooled air is recycled back into the building. The major drawback to this system is the large size of the units, and of the area that must be exposed to the sun. This makes its use practical in large buildings, but not applicable for home use.

Solar energy for home use is an emerging technology also. However, the idea here is to use the energy to power existing air conditioning units rather than replacing them with new technology. Photovoltaic cells mounted on the roof converts solar energy into AC power that can be used to power the air conditioner. In most cases, the amount of power is not sufficient to run the unit, but can supplement the regular electrical supply. The major advantage here is that when the electrical demand is the highest, which would be during the peak daylight hours, the sun will be bearing down most directly on the PV cells.

There is a surge in power consumption during start up of an air conditioner unit. Solar photovoltaic cells can be used to keep the unit running at a very low speed during times it would normally be shut down. This can further reduce the regular electrical use by eliminating many of the starts and stops of the cycle. Solar energy is an emerging technology in a world that is seeking alternative sources of power. Hopefully, in the future, the sun, which creates the heat and humidity that we seek to eliminate with air conditioning, will provide the solution to our continued comfort.

Fundamentals Of Your Air Conditioning System

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Appliances

An air conditioning system can vary by the particular brand. That being said, here are some of the common components you will run into.

A true air conditioning system performs three basic functions. The one that would first occur to anyone entering an air conditioned room from the outside during the summer is air cooling. The lowering of the temperature of the air is one of the basic characteristics of an air conditioning system. Cooling capacity is measured, strangely enough, in a heating measurement, the BTU. A BTU is a British Thermal Unit which is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one pound of water one degree of temperature measured in Fahrenheit.

The efficiency of an air conditioning unit can be measured by a standard known as SEER rating. SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The minimum SEER rating has been 10, but recently was raised to 13 in January of 2006. The SEER is defined as the total annual BTU output of the unit defined by its energy input. The Federal Government and the Department of Energy have regulated the required SEER of all new air conditioning units in an attempt to reduce energy consumption.

High efficiency in cooling is more critical in climates where annual temperatures are higher and the demand for air conditioning is greater. It is actually worse to have a unit that is too large for the size of the building being cooled. An oversized unit not only costs more than it should, but runs efficiently. It will also not run long enough to properly dehumidify the air.

The ability to remove moisture from the ambient air is another characteristic of an air conditioner. Humidity is often as important to comfort as air temperature. High humidity also can contribute to health problems and contributes to mold growth in the duct work of the system and in the home itself. A regular refrigerant type air conditioner removes moisture from the air by condensation as the moist air passes over the cooling coils. The process is similar to what happens when you have a glass of cold liquid on a hot, humid day. Just as water will condense out of the air on the outside of the glass, it condenses on the tubing of the cooling coils. The condensed moisture drips off the pipes and is removed by a drain in the duct work.

Air filtering is the third characteristic of an air conditioner. Filtering is done by passing the air intake flow through a filter that removes dust and lint. Some filters can be used that remove microscopic pollutants from the air. The filters need to be changed on a frequent basis as a clogged filter greatly reduces the efficiency of the unit. Cooling, dehumidifying, and filtering are all characteristics of a good system, and produce air that is comfortable, dry, and clean.

Compare Various Vacuum Cleaners To Find The Right One

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Appliances

Vacuum cleaners have been around for a long time. While they originally started out as your basic upright models, strictly designed for one job, they have morphed into many lines of machines to handle just about any type of cleaning chores. With all these choices, how do you know which vacuum is right for you? You need to compare the various vacuums to look at what each can do, and then compare this with your needs. Here is a comparison of the popular types of vacuum cleaners, offered by most of the major manufacturers:

Upright Vacuums Can Do It All

An upright vacuum is the most common type of cleaner you will find in a household today. They tend to have the most features or bells and whistles, plus they can handle a wide variety of jobs. For vacuuming all the carpets in your home on a periodic basis you cannot go wrong with one of these. The only downside to them is they can be bulky and difficult to carry around, especially up and down stairs.

Canister Vacuum Cleaners Are Powerful As Well

Canisters also typically come with a wide variety of features for many cleaning jobs. The difference between these and uprights is the motor on the canister vacuum is not the same part as the hose. You can easily lift, stretch, and pull the hose into any hard to reach position. While these are handy machines, one drawback is the fact that you have to wheel the motor around behind you as you move from room to room.

Hand Vacs Have Alot Of Power In A Small Frame

When trying to compare these vacuum cleaners to others you may think that these little machines can’t accomplish much. Nothing could be further from the truth though. Where they thrive is cleaning up small messes in a quick and easy manner. If you need to vacuum up a few crumbs or a small pile of dirt, you will find it much easier to use a hand vac as opposed to a full size upright. And since they are cordless, you can take them just about anywhere. Just make sure they are fully charged at all times.

Shampoo Your Rugs With A Carpet Extractor

Every once in a while you should shampoo your carpeting throughout your home. Standard vacuums are great at keeping dust and dirt at bay, but over time the fibers in your rugs can become soiled with a variety of substances. By using a carpet extractor or shampooer, you can ‘wash’ them and return them to like new condition. This line of vacuum cleaners is also handy at quickly removing stains resulting from pets, juice, mud, and many other spills. Having one on hand is a good idea, especially if you have small children or pets in your home.

Lightweight Stick Vacuums Are Revolutionary In Their Design

Stick or vacuum brooms as they are sometimes referred to are light (as low as 3 pounds) and easy to move around. They are ideal at cleaning hard floors, and are a great replacement for the broom and dustpan combo used by many people. They essentially are a broom and dust pan rolled up into one machine, but powered for an easier cleaning experience. Their cordless design means you won’t be tripping over a cord or moving from outlet to outlet. Simply charge it up, turn it on, and begin sweeping like you are used to with your standard broom. Watch the dirt disappear into the canister.

These are some of the more popular categories of vacuum cleaners sold today. There are more but these will perform most jobs you can throw at them. Which ones you need really depend on your situation. One may suffice, or you may need all of them. Compare your needs with what each vac will do before you make your decision. It will be a much better investment in the long run.

Electrical Power Tool Safety

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Appliances

Other general precautions to take with power tools are:

Never carry tools by the cord.

Never yank the cord to disconnect it from the receptacle.

Disconnect tools when changing blades, bits, or cutters.

Avoid loose clothing that can get caught in moving parts.

Watch for trip hazards from cords.

Do not use electrical tools in wet or damp locations.

Another important aspect of electrical power tools is guarding.
Lack of proper guarding, or improper use of guards is a frequent OSHA violation.
OSHA’s stance on guarding is that any hazardous moving parts of a tool that an employee can come into contact with must be guarded. All tools are required to have guards properly in place when in use except under the following conditions:

When there was no guard manufactured for the particular tool.

When the circular blade or abrasive wheel is less than 2 inches in diameter (such as a “Dremel” tool, or die-grinder).

When a grinding wheel is used inside of an object that surrounds the wheel completely (such as grinding the inside of a steel pipe).

When it is impossible to use a grinding wheel with the guard in place due to the configuration of the workpiece.

In the last case, safety flanges (which mount onto the grinding wheel) would have to be used with the grinding wheel, and the grinding wheel manufactured for use with safety flanges. In the case of tools which had no guards at the time of manufacture, OSHA will not require guards to be fabricated. OSHA will however require the use of personal protective equipment by any involved workers.

Interestingly enough, OSHA even has requirements for the type of electrical switches used on power tools. Power tools are allowed one of three type of switches.

Drills, fastener drivers, grinders (with wheels larger than 2 inches), disc and belt sanders, saber saws, reciprocating saws and other similar tools shall have the momentary “On-Off” switch. This switch may have the “Lock-On” control which allows the worker to release with the same trigger finger. Small disc sanders and grinders with wheel less than 2 inches, routers, planers, nibblers, shears, and jigsaws with blade shanks 1/4 inch wide or less may have a positive “On-Off” switch. Circular saws, chain saws and percussion tools that cannot be easily held shall have constant-pressure switches that will shut off the power when released.

Naturally some electrical tools are safer than others. Battery-powered tools are intrinsically safe from electrical shock. There are also some low-voltage tools that operate through a transformer, which offers some greater protection, and then the double-insulated tools have an insulated body that offers protection without using the grounding conductor. In any case, OSHA would still require extension cords to be three-pronged even if used with two-pronged devices since the cords would likely be used later on other tools or equipment.

This is part two of a two part series on Electrical Power Tool Safety.

Future of Energy: Biodiesel Generators

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Appliances

One of the most exciting new fuel solutions presented has to be biodiesel. For all people who have not heard about biodiesel, it is made from a combination of organic oils like corn, canola, or soy oil with other ingredients to produce a fuel that burns similar to diesel fuel used in vehicles. Biodiesel can even be combined with regular diesel to form a combination of the two fuels that is cleaner burning and safer.

Petroleum and oil are both fossil fuels that eventually run out, and with countries like China, India, and others starting to expand their society and add millions of vehicles and other gasoline powered machines, the supply will dwindle much faster. Thus biodiesel, a fuel that is made from organic oils, can be pretty much grown to meet higher supply and demand. This is one of biodiesel’s really strong points in that it is a highly renewable resource that also has less emissions so it is safer for the environment. Because organic materials used to make biodiesel can be grown, the farmers are supported by a bigger demand and the dependency on oil can be decreased. These points alone should make biodiesel a very great looking alternative fuel.

Biodiesel is currently being used more and more in all types of applications. Many cities are switching city vehicles and other emergency vehicles to use biodiesel as fuel source, thus decreasing cost and lowering pollution. Some gas stations already offer B20, a blend of biodiesel and 80% petrodiesel, that can be used in most diesel vehicles effectively and safely. Biodiesel can currently be used in most newer diesel engines without the need for major modifications or overhaul of the engine. This allows a quicker onset into the public than other fuel solutions. The abundance of many diesel fueled applications allows biodiesel to be used immediately to help cut costs and help the environment as well. Everything from cars, farm vehicles, generators, and a lot of other machines already can utilize biodiesel.

The future of biodiesel as a major energy source is definitely a great possibility. With more research on ways on developing and better utilizing biodiesel, it’s applications will greatly increase. Imagine being able to take cooking oil after frying something up, adding an additive to remove the smell and being able to use that waste oil as fuel for diesel engines. This can be the future of biodiesel and many restaurants that use a lot of frying oil can use this oil to fuel other appliances as diesel furnaces. The future of biodiesel as a major fuel source really depends on the fact that it is highly renewable and the great efficiency possible.

With the future of energy solutions still up for grabs, biodiesel will definitely be a contender. The emergence of new technology and the need to break the bonds developed from oil use will definitely push biodiesel usage up.
