Why You Must Take a Fresh Look at Solar Power

Published by under Energy Saving

With ever-rising energy prices and a global need to move towards more sustainable energy alternatives, solar power is a rapidly growing technology. Each year it moves on with better developments. While installation costs have been a traditionally high barrier for people, prices are now coming down. In many places government grants are available too.

So what is a solar panel? Simply put it is a panel made up of many smaller solar cells. These are wired together to create a usable output. As each cell is so small, they can’t provide sufficient power for our domestic needs alone. As a rule size of the panel is selected to supply the correct output, and the larger the panel the higher the output.

These panels are designed to take the energy from our sun and convert it into electricity. This process is called photovoltaic.

People have been harnessing the power of the sun for many years. Even the earliest cultures used it to dry food and heat liquid. The process was further refined around the industrial revolution. New solar applications were constructed to use the heat from the sun to boil water and create steam to drive factory machines. These, though groundbreaking, were very crude and it would take many more years until fully usable power could be harnessed.

Solar power is not just great for our homes either. It is also widely used in new road building projects. Lights, traffic signs, warning signs etc can all be powered, or partly powered by solar technology. This means a higher initial outlay for the project, but far lower running costs to local governments.

The most popular application in recent years has been that of solar powered external lighting. These types of lights are now available at such low cost and are so easy to fit that they are now commonplace in gardens across the world.

Space technology has also been enhanced and improved with the use of solar power. Indeed many of our satellite applications would not be possible if it was not for the natural power from our sun. A good thing to remember the next time you are watching your favourite sport in HD.

Of course, we must not forget that it not just the cost savings, which make solar power attractive, it is also a silent process with no emissions to damage the environment. They are also maintenance free. Isn’t it about time you looked at solar power?

From fitting a door draught excluder and insulating your house to working on efficient driving techniques. Saving money is our aim.

The Humble Garage – No Longer Just a Dumping Ground

Published by under Garage & Storage

For many home owners the humble garage is now thought of as the most popular part of the house to store away all those old, miss-used and even broken items that they just can’t bear to throw away. Over the last decade the garage has become the ‘Mecca’ of all things clutter and for much of the UK the days when the average homeowner uses their garage to park their car have become a vacant memory.

Instead most garages have been turned into the family dumping ground where everything is simply scattered around the floor and several years worth of clutter is left to collect dust. In a survey to 1000 homeowners over 70% of the people surveyed stated that their garage was ‘that room’ in the house which was the most untidy, most cluttered and most annoying to live with.

With this recent trend becoming increasingly more common, is this the beginning of the end of the humble garage? Will the garage only serve to be a gathering spot for all the unwanted clutter, tools and equipment and is the family run-around always destined to be left on the drive when it’s not being used. Well, with the introduction of a new garage design trend this no longer seems to be the case!

Over the last few years the introduction of the exciting Fitted Garage concept has revolutionised the typical garage and has transformed it into an ideal room that can be tailored around the lifestyle of the its owner. Just as you’d go out and hit all those DIY stores to choose the perfect new kitchen suite, home owners are now getting increasingly more excited about their garages and are turning them into a room that they can be proud of.

Because of the advantages that the Fitted Garage concept can present, it is fast becoming a growing design trend amongst interior designers and homeowners alike – changing the way homeowners think about their garages. So what does this exciting new concept provide?

Well firstly it creates a lot more style and substance within the garage. New owners of the Fitted Garage can use it to transform their garage and ensure that the whole of the garage is clean, tidy and fully utilised. Although stunningly stylish in its own right, the Fitted Garage can also be designed and styled to meet the unique needs of the owner, making it extremely flexible for the lifestyle and personal tastes of the individual.

In addition to re-styling the garage this unique new concept can be used to create increased storage where all those tools, sports and garden equipment have a home. With a reduction in clutter and the creation of more floor space, the homeowner can take their car off the driveway again and park it back in its rightful place.

With homeowners continuing to see the benefits of the Fitted Garage concept it’s safe to say that home owners are now beginning to realise the full potential that their garage represents. They’re no longer using it as just a dumping ground and are transforming their garage into the dream garage or lifestyle room.

Cheap Soundproofing – Materials to Avoid

Published by under Audio & Video

If you are soundproofing on a budget, you may be tempted to look at using some everyday items around the house for soundproofing rather than using specially made soundproofing equipment. This could be potentially fraught with danger. Often the materials we use in place of the real stuff turns out to be unwieldy, short-lasting, and almost as expensive. Here are a few common materials that people will try to use for soundproofing, but really shouldn’t.

  1. Egg crates – This is probably the most common “soundproofing” material that people will try to use. They will go to amazing length to procure large quantities of this stuff, but unfortunately it does diddly squat. Egg crates have no sound blocking ability. They may have some sound absorption activity, so the sound in the room may sound nicer, but they won’t stop any sound from annoying the neighbours. Being made out of cardboard, they are not very durable either. Any moisture and they will begin to get mouldy, becoming smelly as well as being inefficient.
  2. Mattresses – Nailing mattresses to the wall is another commonly recommended budget option for soundproofing. Strangely enough, this could actually work in some circumstances – if you have covered the entire wall and acoustically sealed in between the mattresses, then they will have some sound blocking ability. Of course, the downside is that they are bulky, ugly and relatively expensive.
  3. Regular foam – Again, this may provide some benefit in sound reduction. But you are better off using the specially designed acoustic foam. Regular foam is more likely to break down and perish, while not being as effective as the proper materials. The amount of money you would save by using this product would be lost in the extra soundproofing needed, and the need for replacement as the material perished.
  4. Carpet – Nailing carpet to the walls is another way to achieve little at great effort and considerable expense. Carpet has no soundproofing abilities at all. It does provide some acoustic enhancement by absorbing reflections, but you will achieve no soundproofing from using this product.
  5. Cellulose Foam – Filling your walls with this foam will have negligible benefit. It might seem like filling your walls with insulation is a guaranteed improvement in soundproofing, but this is not necessarily so. An empty “dead” mass of air (i.e. well sealed) is actually a very effective sound blocker. Filling this with foam will probably not improve your results at all, and in the worst case scenario could hinder it. If you do want to use insulation in your walls, then a specially designed product such as Rockwool will give you the best results.

When it comes down to it, it is a lot smarter to use proper soundproofing materials rather than repurposing materials that just aren’t up to the job. You will get better results, it is easier to do, and your efforts will last longer. Unless you are really strapped for cash, have access to a very cheap supply of one of the above materials and don’t mind things going pear-shaped, you should stick with the proper materials. It will save you money and headaches in the long run. The best cheap soundproofing is the kind that you only have to do once.

Picture Frames As Decor and More

Published by under Interior Decorating

Picture frames display favorite photos and artwork, from Picasso to the pint sized painter. Most home owners show off their family photos in a variety of frames throughout their homes, in both public and private spaces; after all, homes are for living, not magazine photo shoots. It is a good idea to keep your frame styles similar if you are looking to display photos in the public areas of your home.

Changing out photos is a good thing to do once your available surface area is overrun with too many pictures, and organizing your photos by size and common theme is a nice way to achieve a cohesive look. An odd, unexpected style of frame can add interest in a field of “all the same” frames, if the frames are all the same color; think simple black frames and in the mix you paint an ornate frame the same flat or gloss black as the rest of the frames. You could add a few odd frames throughout an entire wall of frames of like color.

Frames alone can be a great decor item. Large ornate frames can be painted and used as mirrors, imagine an inexpensive, guilt frame in a funky color; think red, lime green or bright blue and position it over a vanity in a powder room or “tween” bedroom or guest room. This is a great jumping off point for a fun use of color and design experimentation.

A large frame that you have in your collection or one you find while shopping at tag sale, can become an interesting serving tray, with the addition of a plywood back and a pair of handles. Or take an old family frame that really doesn’t go with anything, but you still love it; frame a wallpaper scrap that you love the colors or design, or a textile, and place it in an entry, hallway or powder room. You keep some of the past and it becomes a conversation piece.

Shop for frames at one cent sales or two for one sales; select a variety of frames you like the shapes and sizes; then paint them all the same color. Paint a wall in the guest room a fun color and paint the frames a contrasting color; the color doesn’t have to be loud. If your walls are a soft blue, you could paint your frames a lime green for some pop and add a bedspread with soft blues and a hint of lime green. Or select a bedspread and take your color cues for the walls and frames from the spread. For a more elegant look to a room, paint the walls a soft color and add glossy white paint to the variety of frames; and position the frames over the bed, instead of a headboard.

The Sound Will Transport Your Home Theater Experience

Published by under Audio & Video

Think about what makes the experience better when you are watching movies at home. Of course the television is very important and then whatever component you use to watch the movie is important too. However, the thing that is a big help for the television and DVD player is great, fantastic, expansive sound. It takes the audio portion of the movie to really make the experience incredible.

If you think about it what is it that makes a horror movie so scary? To bring up the tension in this genre of movies the music is very important combined with the other sounds. Consider hearing drips of water in an abandoned mine or the sound of footsteps as the bad person comes up on their victim. Without these sounds the movies doesn’t have the same impact.

The effect of this sound is profound as it makes the movie much more intense and have more depth than just seeing the picture. You can experiment with this by putting on some headphones while you view a horror movie or an action film. You will be transported to a different dimension, expanding the viewing experience tremendously. This is what makes going to the movie house so much fun, the volume on the sounds and music is very loud, you can feel it in your body.

This sound makes a movie so much more fantastic and you can experience this in your home. What you need to do is to research a bit and get the best quality surround sound system for your living space, be it an apartment or a single family dwelling. But before you purchase it know what room it’s going in, if it’s a small room or a bedroom then you don’t have to buy the largest system on the market.

An option in this genre is a bar system made up of a sound bar to be placed in front of the television or on top of it and then a sub woofer to place beside the television. It is not a true surround sound system but it mimics the surround sound by creating the sound of speakers all around you. This is great option for a smaller room where you don’t have to have so much power, but still want the experience of the sound. You won’t have to take up a lot of space with this system or have a bunch of power you can’t really use.

Remodeling Your Kitchen’s Floor

It’s always best to choose a kitchen floor that will work well with the style and look you wish to achieve in the room. Although people tend to go for certain flooring options more than others, that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to fall in line. Consider some of these different ideas for a kitchen floor.

Wood Flooring for the Kitchen
When it comes to kitchen, wood floors are a common choice. As a matter of fact, one of the most popular types of flooring options available is wood flooring. If you decide to go with wood floors, you’ll have several different types of wood to choose from. The warmth that’s inherent in wood adds character to a kitchen space, whether it’s a basic pine slat or a trendier, more environmentally conscience bamboo wood floor. Choose a color and type of wood that fits with your kitchen’s style and theme.

Tile Flooring: Timeless and Tasteful
Kitchen tile is another very popular type of flooring. With this type of flooring you have many different options to choose from, from different colors and designs to a variety of materials. For instance, you can choose from plain tile floors, ones that are laid out in a design, and others that resemble stone or are decorative. Both ceramic and porcelain tile floors are resistant to stains and scratches and require little maintenance. The tiles are prone to cracking, however, so try not to drop anything on them.

Laminate Flooring in the Kitchen
A less expensive choice in terms of kitchen flooring is laminate. The new laminate flooring offers many different options that you can choose from. A very popular type of laminate flooring is that which looks like wood and can easily pass for a genuine wood floor. Other options include laminate floors that look like tile. You can also go with a plain laminate floor. These floors are very simple but can fit in perfectly to play down a visually striking kitchen. The reason may people choose laminate floors over a tile or real wood floor is that they can be installed easily and cost much less.

Concrete Flooring in the Kitchen
Although people don’t always think of a concrete floor for the kitchen, they are actually becoming increasingly popular. A kitchen concrete floor is not the same thing as a regular concrete floor. These decorative and stained concrete floors can have patterns and color incorporated into their matrix. Concrete floors are very reasonable when compared to real wood floors and are also remarkably durable.

Vinyl for a Kitchen Floor
Another inexpensive flooring option for the kitchen is vinyl tile or sheet. Vinyl in the kitchen often brings to mind the old linoleum floors of the past, but vinyl has come a long way from those days. These days vinyl can bring style and beauty to any kitchen, as patterns, colors, and designs have literally taken over the market. One of the best advantages to vinyl is that you can really save money by installing the floor yourself. A vinyl tile floor can make a clear statement in your kitchen, or it can be a quiet, calming addition to your décor. Whatever type of vinyl floor you choose to install is up to you, as there are thousands of options.

You have many flooring options for the kitchen—these are just some of your choices. First narrow down your selection, and then go out and see what’s locally available. You’ll be surprised when you find out just how many options are available to you.

Locksmiths Do Commercial Services As Well

Published by under Home Security

Everyone knows that when you lock yourself out of a car, the locksmith is the person you call. Often they are only used for these emergency situations and people are not even aware of the other services that they offer. It comes as a shock to many to learn that the same locksmith that picks their home lock provides commercial services. But it is true. Commercial services make up a chunk of a locksmith business. But what services does a locksmith do for those businesses?

Well for starters they can install locks. Many businesses are opting to go with much more secure door locks for their establishments and they need them professionally installed. If you want all of your valuable business equipment protected, you want only the best and strongest protection available. A locksmith is well trained in not only providing the most current information about lock security, but in installing those secure locks in a way that helps prevent break-ins.

Locksmiths are also highly trained in installing security devices. Unlike an alarm company that is often only trained in the installation and running of a particular alarm, the locksmith is trained in the security as a whole. He or she will know what works well and how to use it.

Many businesses such as hotels use a keyed entry system and sometimes these malfunction. Locksmiths are trained in fixing these locks as well. Modern locksmiths are up-to-date on all the latest technology concerning locks and security. So when it needs to be coded or re-keyed, the locksmith is the person to call.

If a safe lock gets broken in a business, the owner may lose access to important documents and even money. For this reason, he or she would need a locksmith to fix or replace the lock.

Locksmiths are great for homes and emergencies but they are highly valuable in the commercial world as well.
