Building Safe Stairs

As a general rule of thumb in stair building the sum of the tread and riser should equal around 17 1/2 inches. This is a general rule of thumb for a comfortable, easy to walk up and down set of stairs.

For example if your stair tread is 10 inches and the stair riser is 7 1/2 inches you have a comfortable stairway. Walking up and down a stairway using this formula creates a comfortable set of stairs. The next time you walk down any uncomfortable set of stairs measure the stair tread and riser. You will be amazed at what you’ll find.

For public stairs or heavily used stairs this method will become one of your best friends. On public stairs you have liability issues and of course lawyer issues if you are the owner of the building. If you are not building a safe set of stairs that meets your local building codes standards you could be in for a whopping financial nightmare.

Building safe stairs as a contractor is your obligation to society. I don’t know how many times I come across a loose stair tread or a broken hand rail. One of the biggest problems I find is in the poorer neighborhoods you come across some major construction problems and safety hazards. I never have been able to figure out why a building owner would not want to protect himself financially and the people that occupy and use his buildings safety.

Here’s something you need to avoid when using the stair building general rule of thumb. This rule of thumb does not apply to good to an 8 inch tread with a 9 1/2 inch stair rise. You don’t want to be building a latter you want to be building a safe set up stairs.

The maximum stair rise you can use for most building codes is 8 inches. You will not find the stairway to comfortable with a 9 1/2 inch stair tread and an 8 inch riser. If you have no choice and are cramped for space and you can’t redesign this stairway to fit in the house or building then at least make sure you have a nice sturdy grip able stair hand rail.

This formula works great when you are working with exterior landscaping and you have a long run of stairs with a small rise. For example: if you have a 14 inch stair tread and you use a 4 inch riser this will lead to a comfortable step.

Look for stairs in your neighborhood or around some apartment complexes that don’t follow these rules and have 16 inch stair treads with 7 inch risers. You will find yourself taking two steps on the stair tread on every other step and it is not a real comfortable stairway.

Happy stair building and keep this formula in mind for a nice comfortable set of stairs in your building future.

He is currently working on more building stairs books and adding useful content to help solve problems created by the lack of construction knowledge in the building industry.

Easy Ways to Repair a Hole in Your Wall

It is extremely easy to make holes into a wall, however it is extremely difficult to fix a hole if you already have one. Actually it’s not that difficult, there are some easy steps that you can follow to make the job easy.

1. Measure the size of the hole

You need to work out the size of the hole that you want to repair as different sizes of holes require different methods of repair. If it’s a very small hole then simply patching it with some compound is enough. When it has dried then you should sand back the spot for an even finish.

If the hole you want to repair is a bit bigger, perhaps as big as a light switch box then you should fill the hole with some newspaper before you apply the compound. This means that you don’t need to use as much compound.

For holes that are around 30cmx30cm you should use hot patching. This means that you fill the hole with some drywall.

For very large holes in your wall you will need to treat them as new areas that need recovering. Start by removing any nails and screws that are sticking up through the plasterboard. Cut a new piece of dry walling and secure it into place, then tape and finish as normal.

So first thing to do is to measure the hole and then see what method is suitable.

2. Preparation

When you’ve found the right technique to fix your hole then you need to make sure you have everything you need in order to fix it. You will need some specific supplies in order to complete the project. When the compound is mixed you need to work quite quickly so that you don’t risk it drying too quickly.

If you are filling a large hole then make sure that the drywall is already cut to shape before you mix the compound. Make sure you double check any measurements so that everything is correct.

3. Don’t Over Spackle

If you have a large hole then simply applying compound isn’t good enough because there’s nothing for the compound to stick to. This patch will almost certainly crack or fall out in the near future. You should apply as little compound as possible and make sure it is smooth and even. Applying too much compound means that you will have a long time sanding down the excess!

4. Be patient

When you are trying to complete any project then you need to be patient as it won’t all be possible over night. If you try to sand the compound before it is completely dry then you will make a lot of mess and you might have to start again from the beginning. You need to consider that you need some time to relax, you can’t spend all of your time on these projects.

5. Sanding and Finishing

The compound might look like its smooth, but it’s not. You need to sand it the best you possibly can. There might be very small bumps which you don’t notice. Sand down the area so that the wall is completely smooth before painting.

The Only Home Design Tips You Need

A home is a very personal thing, which is why everyone wants to make their home the best that it can possibly be. Interior design is one thing, but now many more people are starting to design their own home and build it from the ground up.

Even if you don’t know anything about designing houses then you can still help to create your dream home by assisting a contractor with decisions. The success of your home will depend on the design, rather than the team that you are employing. You might think that you are excited about your dream home, but how do you know what you actually want. How should you design and lay out your room. You should take some time to plan your own home design, and do so carefully.

Open House

The first way of getting some inspiration is to go out and visit other houses which are already completed. There are many open houses which you can visit for inspiration and ideas. Sometimes people will spend all day driving around looking at houses to get some great ideas. As well as getting ideas about your home you can also see some interesting sights that you wouldn’t otherwise have seen.

It’s a good idea if you can go out on a Sunday as you should be able to visit some of the open houses which are held by a number of different estate agents. This can be a really good way to get some ideas and see how they can really work in your own home.

Magazines

There are also a number of perfect living magazines which might give you just the right idea for your own home. Many people think that it’s silly to look at these magazines, however it really is a good idea. You need to spend some time checking out these magazines so that you can get inspiration and ideas.

You need to remember that you are not creating a simple home, you are creating your dream home. You want to make sure that you create something which you will love and never want to leave. You might also want to get some ideas at your local home improvement store, many of the staff in these stores will be able to assist you and offer their advice.

Every year big companies run competitions offering people the chance to win their dream home custom designed. That has never actually made sense to me because nobody else will know how your dream home will look except you. Make sure you plan your own home so that it really is your dream home. Only you will be able to create the home of your dreams, nobody else! If you need some advice then talk to professionals.

Being especially interested in designer shower curtains and crazy shower curtains, Johnathan Bakers has been authoring large numbers of news on the matter. With his publications on fun shower curtains the writer expressed his skill in the field.

An Electrically-Charged, Energy-Saving Epiphany – CFL Light Bulbs

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Energy Saving

The one thing every household must have to generate light is electricity, clearly – unless, of course, you’re the type of person who is more embracing of the simplistic, natural-lighting ways of living. But, assuming you’re thinking differently and acting modernly unlike the Amish and primordial people of old, there’s no doubt you use light bulbs, and have been for years.

What’s needed and proves quite necessary to channel the charge of electricity -and, in the process, cease walking into walls- once nighttime hits are those tiny things called light bulbs, and a good number of them, too. As devices solely designed to produce artificial light from electricity, light bulbs are humans’ current means to do, live and function once the sun dips under on the horizon. Without light bulbs and their electrical transmitting abilities, we would be in a much more darkened and simplistic living position. But, we’re not. We’ve let the light in and have been doing so ever since Thomas Alva Edison provided the first incandescent light bulb.

Progressing Forward, Far From Incandescent Ways of Old

Now, thanks to human inventiveness and scientific advancement there are many different types of light bulbs to choose from. Beyond the incandescent options originally made and provided, people can now choose from halogen, fluorescent, compact fluorescent (CFL), high-intensity discharge, low-pressure sodium and many other types of bulbs and/or lamps. Many people these days, though, typically opt for light bulb options they’re familiar with and have used in their childhood and current households. The most common type of light bulb used, and still holding strong today, are the original incandescents.

But, gaining much more popularity, as of late, are CFL light bulbs or Compact Fluorescent light bulbs. Why, you ask? The reasons are primarily linked to the current conservation and energy issues that are so significant in our day and age.

An Eco-Friendly and Energy-Saving Lighting Craze

That epiphanic cartoon style light bulb has been popping above peoples heads all over the place – an energy-saving notion has been spreading wildly. And whether these individuals are already eco-friendly or are looking to ease their way into a green way of living, they figure the first corrective step would be best initiated in how they use electrical energy.

And it is truly a wise decision, especially when looking to be actively green. The numbers are there to support such a choice too. As it stands, CFL light bulbs are acclaimed for their considerable energy saving abilities.

Using Less Electrical Power & Saving The Atmosphere

CFL light bulbs are about 4 times more efficient than incandescents. Also, in terms of life-spans, incandescents have nothing on CFL light bulbs as CFLs last up to 10 times longer. This means using 1/3 less electricity on average simply through using CFL light bulbs. And in terms of released CO2 emissions, by utilizing the CFL bulbs (and this is just in the case of one CFL bulb) nearly a half ton of CO2 is kept out of the atmosphere. So, figure that if you replace all the incandescent bulbs in your home with CFL light bulbs – and let’s just say you replace 10 incandescents in total – that means you’re actively stopping 5 tons of CO2 emissions from being released into the atmosphere, and subsequently, weakening it.

Leave the incandescent days of old behind and join the energy-saving craze. With CFL light bulbs you’ll be modernized, saving energy and lending a green helping hand.

How to Build Wind Generators – Building a Wind Generator Instructions

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Energy Saving

Learning how to build wind generators was one of our top priorities when we moved off the grid a couple years ago. We already had some solar panels but after building our own home we were pretty short on money to invest in a bigger Renewable energy system.

What kind of options did we have?

· We could buy an expensive wind generator

· We could learn how to build solar panels (which we did later)

· Or learn how to build wind generators

First off we figured we could perhaps buy a wind generator but that option went out the window when we saw the huge price tag of $3200 for the 1000w model we needed.

We did learn how to make solar panels but that was after this project. It cost us a bit more per watt of production power for the solar energy but it did work out well. We decided the wind turbine was the best place to start.

For the same money it takes to produce 100 watts of power with solar panels you can make a 1000 watt home wind power machine. Solar energy is good in that it works well in clear weather when the wind doesn’t blow usually.

So, it turned out that learning how to build wind generators was our best option to start with.

We found some good plans to get started that promised an inexpensive yet good looking turbine.

We had seen some pretty ugly home made wind generators in our travels and we wanted ours to look good. That was very important since it would be up there for all of our visitors to see.

The PVC wind turbine blade design is what convinced us that this was the best route for us to take. The PVC is cut on a bit off center to capture the wind more effectively and work more efficiently, and the colored pipe looked professionally built (and we got it free from a construction site).

That’s another great point to make, most of the parts are available free if you just know where to look for them and that is explained in the plans.

The only real investment we had to make was a DC motor for wind generators. It cost us about $36 but it was shipped directly to us which was nice.

The tower we salvaged from our neighbor, his old TV tower was just sitting there and he let us have it for free.

This was probably the fastest way for us to produce Renewable Energy with the least investment.

And it looks good with PVC pipe blades and a stainless steel body, all shiny and colorful; all of our visitors say it looks like we bought it.

Do you want to build your own? Just follow the link for more information.

Learn How To Build Wind Generators and get started producing free electricity at home with Renewable Energy, and save a lot of money on your household utility bills.

Our family began living off the grid in 2001 and we have never looked back. Learning how to build wind generators was probably the best decision we have made since leaving the city, we saved money and our energy production is way up with our new hybrid off grid system.

The Pros and Cons of Using Solar Power

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Energy Saving

There is little doubt that more people are getting interested in renewable energy sources to provide the energy needs both in their homes and portably. One such system that fits into this category is solar power. This article will cover the pros and cons of using solar power.

Solar thermal and light energy can be used to provide our homes with power. Solar light energy is used in many portable devices. A major advantage of such systems is that they are clean systems. The energy comes from the sun, so there is no need to excavate and process the raw materials to create a usable energy resource.

Using such systems also cuts down on pollution. It does not contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions. It does not pollute the water supply.

Solar power systems can be expected to last a long time. They are tough-wearing and sturdy. They have to be built to last so that owners can recoup their investments. It turns out that solar power systems last much longer than that.

The costs for maintaining a solar power system are very low. Some components of the system may last decades without any maintenance at all. Solar panels are often warranted to maintain 80% of their efficiency for up to 25 years. Other parts will need to be replaced sooner, but if all goes well there should be no maintenance costs at all for the first five years.

A solar power system is neither too dangerous nor too complicated for most people to run. It requires no supervision from the government or any other agency because it poses no risks. The cost of running the systems is also very low.

There are certainly a few negative aspects of using solar power. Before consumers can have any solar power, they have to make a large investment on the equipment and installation. They will make up this investment over the life of the solar power system but this large up front sum can deter many people. There are more grants and incentives being introduced to minimize this deterrent to getting solar energy.

However the biggest issue with solar power is it’s reliability. Ideally you need a location that gets plenty of sun throughout the year. If you get plenty of cloudy days then your supply may be interrupted or decreased. And it doesn’t work at night. There are ways round this, like storing power in batteries or having a back up system however reliability will always be an issue until solar cells can be made more efficient.

To this extent, many governments are not keen on large scale solar energy plants to power towns and cities and see nuclear power as a better option because it is viewed as more reliable (which many people may dispute).

Given that efficiency of solar cells should increase and the costs will come down, it makes a lot of sense to get a solar panel for your home. There should be a fall back system because of the reliability issue. Most people go for a grid tie system whereby they keep grid power and sell their solar power to the utility company, thus getting a discount or cheaper utility bills. This is a stress free way of using solar power.

Find out how does solar power produce electricity and how solar power hot water systems work in the home at http://www.solarpowerappliances.com Adrian Whittle writes about using solar power and appliances that can utilize renewable energy sources.

Do It Yourself Inground Pool- How To Create A Pool Without Hiring An Expert

Published by L.A. Remodeler under DIY

We are so accustomed to ‘experts’ doing most of our chores that we don’t tend to look beyond these ‘experts’. Whenever we are faced with a seemingly impossible job, we just assume that we cannot do it and so we hire experts for the job. And the truth is: this is how the experts hold the reins to our lives. They can charge whatever they want for the job, and you either pay up or you don’t get those things done. A pool is no different.

Now, if you need a baby pool or a simple three footer pool, you can visit your local departmental store to get one for yourself and save some costs in the process. But what if you need an inground pool? That is when you turn at the experts and hope that you won’t have to sell your kidneys to pay up for their costs. While your near and dear ones look up to you with hope in their eyes, you look at your budget and think whether it is feasible at all!

Well, that was until now! Not anymore! In this article I will tell you about a surefire technique you can use to create an inground pool for yourself whenever you want, without hiring experts at all! Think about it: what is an inground pool anyway? A hole in the earth that holds water.

Now, before you start the job, you might need some type of construction license. You will also need to meet the noise requirements as set by your local law. For details, you might want to check with your local city clerk. And you will also need to give your imagination a whirl. Remember that what we are describing here will cover the basics only! Much of how the pool will be designed is left to your imagination.

First, you need to choose the spot where you want the pool to be made. Make sure that the spot is a place you can do without. Plan carefully before you start digging, or you will make a huge mess of your beautiful garden. Once you have selected the spot, mark it with some form of white paint. Then call in your friends over bar-b-cues, hand them shovels and ask them to start digging. In my estimate, this project will take up an entire summer of bar-b-cues, but that is okay, because at the end of it, you will have created a nice looking pool without spending a lot of overhead costs and without hiring the ‘professionals’.

Is this is too much for you, you have yet another option: rent a backhoe for yourself. You can rent backhoes from many places but I rent my backhoes from American Rent-All Sales and Services.

When you rent a backhoe, you must know what you are doing. If you think you cannot handle this, by all means, hire an expert for your job. If however you think that you will be able to handle it, and that it is perfectly legal to use them in the area you live in, then of course you should go ahead and do it yourself and save that extra cost!

Installing Ceramic Tile

Published by L.A. Remodeler under DIY

Knowing how to lay ceramic tile is not too difficult, but if you’ve never done it before and aren’t very handy to begin with you might be better off with a professional. Having said that many homeowners have attempted their own remodeling, but the fact remains

that there are some projects, such as installing ceramic tile floors and even painting that are tackled by the homeowner.

When installing ceramic tile for the first time, make sure you do your homework. So why would you install ceramic tile floor? Most people believe, and rightfully so, that installing ceramic wall tiles and flooring is an attractive and hard wearing surface ideally suited to an installation in bathrooms and kitchens.

Some homeowners lay their ceramic tiles in areas other than wet areas like family rooms and dining rooms. These

installations tend to be found in parts of the world that typically have long hot summers and mild winters, or humid tropical climates. The benefit is having a cool, hard wearing and easy to clean surface.

Patience and resilience are prerequisites on how to lay tile, having the correct tools for the job is a must. Preparation is the key. If you are installing ceramic wall tile start with the walls first if you are have a project that involves both wall tiling and floor. Floor tiles are typically thicker than wall tile as they do not require the thickness needed for impact resistance that floor tiles require.

Gather your tools, do a check to see if they are all there. Grout, measuring tape, spongese, adhesive, markers or pencils, glass cutters, tile spacers, rubber mallet, steel square, trowel and buckets are some of the tools you will need.

Pre installation floor and wall preparation is key to a successful install. All old flooring and wall paints must be removed, thorough cleaning of the surfaces and any undulating surfaces need to be leveled off first. Some flooring may require special underlay material which creates a solid secure surface for the tiles to adhere to without the risk of surface movement creating cracks at later date.
Concrete floors tend to provide a surface which is stable to lay on, but if the concrete is new as in a new home, the concrete may settle over time creating splits and therefore cracking the tiles that were laid on top of it. There is not much the installer can

do to prevent this from occuring unless the installer lays a cement fiber board underlay which of course increases the installation cost. in wet areas it is important to install this cement fiber board first for moisture and movement correction.

One of the ways the homeowner can express themselves is by being creative in the design of the tile layout. Many patterns are available which can enhance the overall effect of the wall and flooring. Dull boring designs can ruin a possibly beautiful

installation, so some thought before starting will pay dividends for years to come.

Dry laying a section of tiles before applying adhesive can help in deciding how the design will be installed. You will get a much better idea of how it will look and feel before commiting to final laying. It is much better to do this now than after adhesive has been applied. It can also give the installer an idea as to how many half tiles will be needed and can reveal some difficult cuts that may be required.

Installing Ceramic Tile

This is where the tires hit the road. No amount of preparation can help an installer who does not get this right. The skill required to lay ceramic tile is understated, having the right knowledge can make an installation look and feel 100% better than an installation by someone who did not do their homework prior to commencement.

Cutting and fitting tiles is one area most homeowners need instruction on how to best trim and cut those tiles. It can take some skill to get the right cut to fit around those protrusions like bathroom pipes and electrical fittings. This is one area that screams of a poor installation if not done properly. The right tools for the job here really do make a difference. Tile cutters and glass cutters are a must, further tools if required could include an electric wet saw but these tend to be only used by professional tile installers or on large projects.

After installing a few rows of tiles, set them into the adhesive with the tile leveler and a mallet. After setting all the whole tiles across the room, start to cut tiles to fit around the perimeter of the room. Tiles can be snapped by hand or with tile nippers, tile cutters or using a wet saw.

The grouting of the laid surface is a somewhat pleasurable experience as it signifies the impending completion of the project. After applying the grout clean the surface with a damp sponge. Finish seams with some silicone sealant in appropriate areas smoothing the sealant with a wet finger.

Allow all work surfaces time to cure and set, a week is normally enough time to consider it ready for full human encroachment. Stand back and observe a job well done. Of course, all the above is just barely a fraction of what information a homemaker will need to ensure an impressive installation. Reading up and gathering detailed instruction on ceramic tile installation beforehand will be the prerequisite of a wise and successful project.

Now that you have a taste of what’s to come you can see there is a lot of information needed to do a good job. See a review of the best ceramic tile installation guide available at how to lay ceramic tile Go there now to read a review of this comprehensive supportive guide which includes video and step by step instructions.

4 Simple Ways to Decorate on a Budget

Published by L.A. Remodeler under Interior Decorating

BedroomBelieve it or not, no matter how small your budget, it’s possible to bring style to any room in your home. There are so many inexpensive ways to add style to your home, giving it a whole new look. Following are some great ways to decorate any room in your home while sticking to your budget.

1. Paint is the best way to spruce up a room on a tight budget.

With just a couple gallons of paint that will cost you less than 50 dollars, you can give any room an entirely new look. You might use bright or bold colors to add drama to the room, or go with more neutral colors for a more natural appearance. You’ll be surprised how creative you can get with paint. You might choose to paint only one wall an accent color, which will make that wall the focal point of the room. There are many ways to add some real interest to your walls, by painting strips or trying a textured painting technique.

2.  Your windows are another great place to make a big impact on a room without spending a lot of money.

There are a variety of different window coverings to choose from for any type of room. Even if your windows are already covered with blinds, adding a valance to the top will add much more drama to the area.

There are many different creative options to try when dressing a window. Try taking sheer material and draping over a decorative curtain rod as a simple and inexpensive decorating idea. Another easy idea is long curtain panels tied back with thick ribbon or velvet.

3. You can largely impact the look of a room by simply adding some accessories that will tie the room together.

So often it’s the little things that count when it comes to décor. When used the correct way, accessories such as candles, photos, flowers, and baskets on a oak dresser can add a lot to a room. By simply adding a row of candles to a coffee table or wood night stand, you can give a room a more intimate feeling. With a vase of flowers, any kitchen can look more inviting. Even the smallest touches, such as new towels in a bathroom, can make a big difference.

By shopping flea markets and consignment stores for these items, you’ll be able to stick to your budget. Shopping this way may be a bit more time consuming, but it will save you a ton of money, especially if you have your entire house to decorate.

4.  For a new look, try rearranging the furniture or pull items from one room and use them in another.
If your budget is really tight, it makes sense to work with what you have. Always be on the lookout for pieces you can refurbish and add your own style to. For instance, the old vase that use to hold flowers in the family room could be spray painted with a metallic finish to add the perfect touch to your dining room table. Carefully consider the items you have and envision how you might change them to fit the style you’re looking for.

Decorating doesn’t have to cost you thousands of dollars. You’ll be surprised at how far 100 dollars or 200 dollars will get you in bringing style to your home on a tight budget.

Basement Waterproofing Materials

Published by L.A. Remodeler under DIY

There are many different types of materials you can use when waterproofing your basement. The area that you live in affects the amount of moisture that you will be expecting. Some waterproofing materials are better suited for some areas than others.

One of the most important things to remember when waterproofing a basement is to have the land graded properly so that water can channel away from the house. For approximately ten feet from the house the land should be graded so that the ground level reduces by one inch per foot. This should be sufficient in most cases to invite water to drain away from the home.

When it comes to basement waterproofing materials, you need to decide what type of waterproofing system you’re going to use. French drains, also known as land drains, can be used to drive water away from the home. French drains include a system made of gravel, ditches, and pipe that invite groundwater into the pipe and away from the basement or foundation of the home. Dirt and routes can clog this type of drainage system.

Drainage systems, including having a main floor drain in the basement, are effective in routing water out of the basement. These systems should be put in place when the basement is first built. Piping can be placed along the basement walls and under the basement flooring before the concrete floor is poured. This type of system can use a sump pump to continually remove water from the basement. Water is then routed away from the home to an area that is no longer going to cause a problem.

Sump pumps can be ran on electricity and some have a battery back up in case of power failure. Routine maintenance should be done on sump pumps annually, more often if you live in an area that is prone to water problems. Maintaining the drainage system pipes to prevent clogging is also important. Gutters and downspouts should also be checked to make sure there are free of debris.

Other basement waterproofing materials include on sealants. Painted on sealants is one way of waterproofing a basement. This shouldn’t be your only method of waterproofing. Sealing the concrete so that water doesn’t push through works best in areas that don’t get as much moisture. The sealant is painted on to the interior of the basement. This means that water can get all the way up to that point but not seep the rest of the way into your basement. Having your concrete have to deal with that much hydrostatic pressure continuously without any other system in place to assist with waterproofing is asking for a problem.

Special channels can be installed along the interior walls of the basement. Along the base of the wall, close to the floor, a series of small holes invites the water into the channel. Inside these channels small piping carries the water away by using a sump pump type system. This type of channeling water out of the basement can be hidden behind walls in finished basements.
